Who would be a policeman in Australia?

anotd readers might recall the disgusting incident where a group of Aborigines attacked people coming out of a nightclub in March last year.

The saga, just like the ongoing crazy Hindmarsh debacle (subscribers search on Hindmarsh) took a new twist yesterday when Queensland's Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) decided to charge three policemen over their handling of the incident.

Security video taken by the Ipswich City Council's Safe City programme showed the arrests made by the police with footage showing one of those being arrested allegedly drawing a knife at the time.

The police were officially cleared of any wrongdoings together with a group of US Marines who assisted them in the arrests when allegations of assault were laid by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).

Yesterday a spokesman for the CJC said that police officers would now face charges of official misconduct saying that an independent tribunal would be created to hear the charges - with a date yet to be set. If found guilty those involved could face charges ranging from dismissal from the force to counseling.

The Aboriginal industry spokeswoman for ATSIC in South East Queensland, Patricia Thompson, said that she had not heard from the CJC, "We lodged a complaint in March last year and I'm really surprised that it's taken this long, but we haven't received anything official.

"We heard some whispers, but until I know that it's happened I can't make a comment."

The Queensland Police Union general secretary Merv Bainbridge said that the union would back the officers to the hilt. "We view them (the charges) very seriously, serious enough to obtain the best legal talent available and when it comes to these officers, cost is not a consideration because their futures are at stake."

The magistrate investigating the incident last year found that the officers had acted properly. "The magistrate did not find any adverse findings yet the CJC, for reasons as yet unknown, have pursued it," Bainbridge said.

"I personally find it disgraceful and disgusting. The charging of one of these officers is one of the last desperate acts of the CJC because the public is starting to see them for what they are, and that is a law unto themselves."

And here say all of us... now if it had been anglo-Saxons misbehaving like that and being arrested this incident would have long been forgotten. Who would want to be a policeman in this country?

The net catches the GST out

Business on the Internet is set to blossom if the government is successful in bringing in a GST.

Yesterday Prime Minister John Howard confirmed that the net provided shoppers with a GST "loophole" on a range of items like books, CDs, magazines and airline tickets.

Mr Howard was caught off guard when asked a question on the GST and the Internet at a Townsville Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday. Local book store owner Michael Rocke said that his business would be in jeopardy unless the loophole was closed.

Hervey World franchise owner in Townsville, Debra Gludes, said, "We don't need to have clients encouraged to book somewhere else so they can avoid paying the GST which on airline tickets could mean a saving of several hundred dollars."

Meanwhile, in true Tim Fischer-speak, the National leader and deputy Prime Minister said in Brisbane yesterday, "My feet are on the ground. It is not about a new tax as much as it is about a new tax system."

The new tax system has been hammered by Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) spokesman Michael Raper who says that the GST unfairly benefits the rich. Last Raper said that much of the savings made by the government over the last few years had been at the expense of social services such as Legal Aid. He said that the GST on food would reflect unequally on the total disposable income available to the poor and the rich. His view is supported by surveys which show that about 30% of income is spent on food by the poor as opposed to just 12% by the rich.

Kim Beazley (obviously) supporter Raper saying, "This is the biggest sleight of hand in the Government's tax package. What have they done is hijack Au$2 billion worth of funds that were there anyway for pensioners to adjust the pension to meet 25% of male weekly earnings.

"These resources could have been received by pensioners and that's now being counted as compensation."

Pauline Hanson also took the new GST proposal to task on the eve of the release of the new One Nation tax proposal which will ensure that multinationals start paying their fair share - and will move the tax burden off the average Australian.

Skase pulls out the "sick card" again

Christopher Skase, the failed businessman who diddled thousands of Australian shareholders in his Qintex Company in the 1980s has drawn out the Ace again after the heat is again turned on him to return from his hideout in Majorca to face the music back here.

After Australia recently refused to renew his passport demanding his extradition Skase immediately "bought" passports from the Commonwealth of Dominica - apparently at a cost of over Au$100,000. Spain in the meantime have allowed Skase a bit of "breathing space" so that he could put up a case against his extradition.

But Australia has now approached Dominica requesting that the passports be revoked and Skase started crying sick again. Yesterday his son-in-law, Tony Larkins, claimed that Skase only had 30% lung capacity - needed oxygen 8 hours a day and a double lung transplant.

Meanwhile the Spanish authorities are expected to serve Skase with a deportation order as the saga continues to unravel with the businessman expected to lodge an appeal to allow him to stay.

Subject: race watch

Hallo Scot,

This is my first E-mail to GWB. Thank you for all the info you are supplying us with. I am in a way surprised by the methods minority groups are using to attack PHON. Now this "RaceWatch" committee. PHON must realy be worrying them but it also shows who are the real enemies of our way of life. But to me there is also a disturbing sign in all this. I grew up in Nazi occupied Holland and have seen from close by what has been done to the Jews.

I remember the Nazi propoganda where Adolf  Hitler said something like "the Jews are poisoning our society and we have to get rid of them". What disturbs me now is that I start thinking "is there any truth in this". I never thought to reach this state of mind. In 1953, at the invitation of the Australian Government, I came here as a 26 year old migrant and was offered a future in a multi racial society, with a European culture. The first 25 years, when something like 2 million people came here from all over Europe, we "Assimilated" (am I now a racist) very well. I was proud when I became an Australian, but now I am very disappointed. Why did all this have to change. Where in the world is multi-culturism a success.? Sorry Scot for this lenghty epistel.

Best wishes,
Kees Viset.

Subject: Race watch

One of these days in the not too far future, the intelligent ones amongst us will look back on these "Politically Correct" and' Multiculturist Times' and remember things like the 'Racist Watch Group' and the other absolutely ridiculous actions of the few that have lost all touch with reality and we will put it all in the same basket as other stupid things of the past such as 'Cod Pieces, Chastity Belts, Bustles, and Bound Feet.

I find it somewhat frightening that supposedly highly educated persons such as Judges, who are supposed to be completely A-Politic,and whose career demands complete neutrality in their decisions, can commit themselves to the common judgement of anyone being a racist when they do not know them, and have not heard their side of the story. A Judge who still maintains they are entitled to carry out their duties and draw their salaries when they freely admit their bias towards different groups in society, namely anyone that doesn't aggree with them. Also, regarding the Jewish element. I, personally grew up close to a jewish family, who in fact helped me a lot in my childhood and youth. I still hold contact and imagine I always will. That family and the other families who were connected to them were nothing like the sort of people Leibler and Einfeld seem to be. I think the' Race Watch ' type of Jew is a bit on the fanatic side of Judaism.

Any way, I am AGAINST Multiculturism, and Asianisation of Australia. But I am FOR reasonable immigratian from anywhere providing those migrants are prepared to assimilate into the Australian way of life and become truely Australian.

Also, I will continue to express my opinions and views as I choose, BECAUSE that is my RIGHT.

Subject: PETER PAN --A FAIRY TALE FROM THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN

Dear Scott,

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard our Premier, Peter Beattie, on Japanese T.V apologising for our States perceived racism. Is this the same Peter Beattie who, pre election, did his utmost to fan those fires in a politically motivated vendetta against One Nation ? The demonstrations carefully staged to feed the media ? Seems to me that the arsonist has been left to put out his own fires!

The newspapers front page headlines on the Aids/syringe attack on the tourist coinciding with Mr Beattie's visit is suspicious to say the least,.The cartoon drawing depicting the attack was very "convincing", perhaps a photo and the name of the victim could have been included in the report. Has this incident been reported to our authorities ? Has the Murdoch/Packer media empire set the benchmark for journalism in Japan ? Did I hear correctly, the attack allegedly occurred in Sydney?

I have several other serious concerns about Mr Beattie's performance:

1: These type of attacks are unfortunately occurring with increasing regularity all over this country and are not confined to any particular target. They are usually acts committed by drug addicts and / or criminals after quick Dollars to feed their addictions and vices. A RESULT OF YOU AND YOUR CRONIES PATHETIC ATTEMPTS TO DEAL WITH ONE OF THIS COUNTRIES MAJOR PROBLEMS----- THE DRUG TRADE .

The costs to this country in terms of crime and social distress are enormous.

2: Did I hear you correctly Mr Beattie, 23,000 jobs are in danger ? Has the Asian economic meltdown escaped your notice ? Perhaps we could stimulate tourism by targeting other Countries until our Asian neighbours can afford to visit us again.Do we not live in a "global village" Mr Beattie?

3: One Nation is not a part of your Government ? Mr Beattie your party received 36% of the primary vote in the recent Qld. election and 44 elected members some of these on Liberal/ Nat preferences. One Nation polled nearly 25% primary vote for a total of 11 reps ( shades of Joe's infamous gerrymander ? ) .64% OF THIS STATES VOTING POPULATION DID NOT DIRECTLY SUPPORT YOU OR YOUR PARTIES POLICIES. Your party governs on a very tenuous thread.

The opposition performs a very important role in government, they are what separates a Democracy from Fascism. I did not hear you explain to our Japanese friends that our nation has a right to set its own immigration policies, determine our own objectives, set our own agendas and that in a democracy we allow fair debate and encourage citizen input when formulating policies. Perhaps this was edited out in the media's coverage of your interview.

I did not hear of your condemnation of racism and the acts of terrorism which are occurring in countries all around the world and of your disgust at the lack of media outrage directed towards those countries whose Governments seem unwilling to deal with their problem. I was expecting similar outrage at the persecution of minority political parties for democratically addressing the concerns of its membership !

4: Your 5% unemployment target is already looking very shaky especially when you seem to be looking for scapegoats so early in you term of office.

5: Why havent we been swamped with accounts of racist incidents , surely if we are so terrible in our treatment of our visitors they would have re told their stories and persuaded their friends not to visit .The lack of first hand evidence is a worry.

The Japanese people are not fools, Mr Beattie, they have rebuilt their country from the ashes post WW2 , through hard work, the setting and achieving of goals and through the shrewd usage of the assets and raw materials from countries such as our own. They have learned the value of putting their own interests foremost and profit from countries such as our own which allow the wholesale sell off of its industries , real estate and institutions. It is Politicians such as yourself who have allowed this to happen.

HAVE A GOOD DAY..................Steve

Subject: who's bigoted?

In referring to the Northcote by-election results, two correspondents to the Australian called their fellow Victorians who voted for One Nation 'simpleton racists' and 'donkeys' respectively.

This is a perfect example of the incivility, intolerance and plain rudeness of the politically correct. They are incapable of tolerating different viewpoints. For them, freedom of speech only exists as a feel-good abstraction. In reality they vilify and even persecute anybody who dissents from their own pc view of the world.

Why? Because they have never thought for themselves. They have uncritically accepted the media propaganda that One Nation is racist, and so it is simply too uncomfortable, too confronting for them to face their own prejudices. Responding to One Nation by indulging in orgies of rage proves that the foundation of their objections to One Nation is emotional, not intellectual.

Subject: How the Worm turns

It wasn't so long ago that Americans were being forced to integrate, er, assimilate; buses to take kids to different schools to mix the blacks and whites, to combat racism. Now here in Australia, where all colours of kids were always welcome in the same school, assimilation or integration is RACIST. Please explain.

Subject: protocol 12 - freedom of the press

Hi Scott,

The protocols of Zion are a chilling read. Even if those who cannot be criticised didn't write them they have certainly been reading them and acting on them. Thought you might be interested in this one.

PROTOCOL NO. 12

Masonic interpretation of the word "freedom." Future of the press in the masonic kingdom. Control of the press. Correspondence agencies. What is progress as understood by masonry? More about the press. Masonic solidarity in the press of to-day. The arousing of "public" demands in the provinces. Infallibility of the new regime.

The word "freedom," which can be interpreted in various ways, is defined by us as follows:--

Freedom is the right to do that which the law allows. This interpretation of the word will at the proper time be of service to us, because all freedom will thus be in our hands, since the laws will abolish or create only that which is desirable for us according to the aforesaid programme.

We shall deal with the press in the following way: What is the part played by the press today? It serves to excite and inflame those passions which are needed for our purpose or else it serves selfish ends of parties. It is often vapid, unjust, mendacious, and the majority of the public have not the slightest idea what ends the press really serves. We shall saddle and bridle it with a tight curb: we shall do the same also with all productions of the printing press, for where would be the sense of getting rid of the attacks of the press if we remain targets for pamphlets and books? The produce of publicity, which nowadays is a source of heavy expense owing to the necessity of censoring it, will be turned by us into a very lucrative source of income to our State: we shall lay on it a special stamp tax and require deposits of caution-money before permitting the establishment of any organ of the press or of printing offices; these will then have to guarantee our government against any kind of attack on the part of the press. For any attempt to attack us, if such still be possible, we shall inflict fines without mercy. Such measures as stamp tax, deposits, of caution money and fines secured by these deposits, will bring in a huge income to the government. It is true that party organs might not spare money for the sake of publicity, but these we shall shut up at the second attack upon us. No one shall with impunity lay a finger on the aureole of our government infallibility. The pretext for stopping any publication will be the alleged plea that it is agitating the public mind without occasion or justification. I beg you to note that among those making attacks upon us will also be organs established by us, but they will attack exclusively points that we have pre-determined to alter.

Not a single announcement will reach the public without our control. Even now this is already attained by us inasmuch as all news items are received by a few agencies, in whose offices they are focused from all parts of the world. These agencies will then be already entirely ours and will give publicity only to what we dictate to them.

If already now we have contrived to possess ourselves of the minds of the goy communities to such an extent that they all come near looking upon the events of the world through the coloured glasses of those spectacles we are setting astride their noses: if already now there is not a single State where there exist for us any barriers to admittance into what goy stupidity calls State secrets: what will our position be then, when we shall be acknowledged supreme lords of the world in the person of our king of all the world....

Let us turn again to the future of the printing press. Every one desirous of being a publisher, librarian, or printer, will be obliged to provide himself with the diploma instituted therefor, which, in case of any fault, will be immediately impounded. With such measures the instrument of thought will become an educative means in the hands of our government, which will no longer allow the mass of the nation to be led astray in by-ways and fantasies about the blessings of progress. Is there any one of us who does not know that these phantom blessings are the direct roads to foolish imaginings which give birth to anarchical relations of men among themselves and towards authority, because progress, or rather the idea of progress, has introduced the conception of every kind of emancipation, but has failed to establish its limits. . . All the so-called liberals are anarchists, if not in fact, at any rate in thought. Every one of them is hunting after phantoms of freedom, and falling exclusively into license, that is, into the anarchy of protest for the sake of protest.

We turn to the periodical press. We shall impose on it, as on all printed matter, stamp taxes per sheet and deposits of caution-money, and books of less than 30 sheets will pay double. We shall reckon them as pamphlets in order, on the one hand, to reduce the number of magazines, which are the worst form of printed poison, and, on the other, in order that this measure may force writers into such lengthy productions that they will be little read especially as they will be costly. At the same time what we shall publish ourselves to influence mental development in the direction laid down for our profit will he cheap and will be read voraciously. The tax will bring vapid literary ambitions within bounds and the liability to penalties will make literary men dependent upon us. And if there should be any found who are desirous of writing against us, they will not find any person eager to print their productions. Before accepting any production for publication in print the publisher or printer will have to apply to the authorities for permission to do so. Thus we shall know beforehand of all tricks preparing against us and shall nullify them by getting ahead with explanations on the subject treated of.

Literature and journalism are two of the most important educative forces, and therefore our government will become proprietor of the majority of the journals. This will neutralize the injurious influence of the privately-owned press and will put us in possession of the tremendous influence upon the public mind. . . If we give permit for ten journals, we shall ourselves found thirty, and so on the same proportion. This, however, must in nowise be suspected by the public. For which reason all journals published by us will be of the most opposite, in appearance, tendencies and opinions, thereby creating confidence in us and bringing over to us our quite unsuspicious opponents, who will thus fall into our trap and be rendered harmless.

In the front rank will stand organs of an official character. They will always stand guard over our interests, and therefore their influence will comparatively insignificant. In the second rank will be the semi-official organs, whose part it will be to attract the tepid and indifferent. In the third rank we shall set up our own, to all appearance, opposition, which, in at least one of its organs, will present what looks like the very antipodes to us. Our real opponents at heart will accept this simulated opposition as their own and will show us their cards.

All our newspapers will be of all possible complexions -- aristocratic, republican, revolutionary, even anarchical -- for so long, of course, as the constitution exists. . . Like the Indian idol Vishnu they will have a hundred hands, and every one of them will have a finger on any one of the public opinions as required. When a pulse quickens these hands will lead opinion in the direction of our aims, for an excited patient loses all power of judgment and easily yields to suggestion. Those fools who will think they are repeating the opinion of a newspaper of their own camp will be repeating our opinion or any opinion that seems desirable for us. In the vain belief that they are following the organ of their party they will in fact follow the flag which we hang out for them.

In order to direct our newspaper militia in this sense we must take especial and minute care in organizing this matter. Under the title of central department of the press we shall institute literary gatherings at which our agents will without attracting attention issue the orders and watchwords of the day. By discussing and controverting, but always superficially, without touching the essence of the matter, our organs will carry on a sham fight fusillade with the official newspapers solely for the purpose of giving occasion for us to express ourselves more fully than could well be done from the outset in official announcements, whenever, of course, that is to our advantage.

These attacks upon us will also serve another purpose, namely, that our subjects will be convinced of the existence of full freedom of speech and so give our agents an occasion to affirm that all organs which oppose us are empty babblers, since they are incapable of finding any substantial objections to our orders.

Methods of organization like these, imperceptible to the public eye but absolutely sure, are the best calculated to succeed in bringing the attention and the confidence of the public to the side of our government. Thanks to such methods we shall be in a position as from time to time may be required, to excite or to tranquillise the public mind on political questions, to persuade or to confuse, printing now truth, now lies, facts or their contradictions, according as they may be well or ill received, always very cautiously feeling our ground before stepping upon it. . . We shall have a sure triumph over our opponents since they will not have at their disposition organs of the press in which they can give full and final expression to their views owing to the aforesaid methods of dealing with the press. We shall not even need to refute them except very superficially.

Trial shots like these, fired by us in the third rank of our press, in case of need, will be energetically refuted by us in our semi-official organs.

Even nowadays, already, to take only the French press, there are forms which reveal masonic solidarity in acting on the watchword: all organs of the press are bound together by professional secrecy; like the augurs of old, not one of their numbers will give away the secret of his sources of information unless it be resolved to make announcement of them. Not one journalist will venture to betray this secret, for not one of them is ever admitted to practise literature unless his whole past has some disgraceful sore or other. . . These sores would be immediately revealed. So long as they remain the secret of a few the prestige of the journalist attracts the majority of the country -- the mob follow after him with enthusiasm.

Our calculations are especially extended to the provinces. It is indispensable for us to inflame there those hopes and impulses with which we could at any moment fall upon the capital, and we shall represent to the capitals that these expressions are the independent hopes and impulses of the provinces. Naturally, the source of them will be always one and the same -- ours. What we need is that, until such time as we are in the plenitude of power, the capitals should find themselves stifled by the provincial opinion of the nation, i.e., of a majority arranged by our agentur. What we need is that at the psychological moment the capitals should not be in a position to discuss an accomplished fact for the simple reason, if for no other, that it has been accepted by the public opinion of a majority in the provinces. When we are in the period of the new regime transitional to that of our assumption of full sovereignity must not admit any revelations by the press of any form of public dishonesty; it is necessary that the new regime should be thought to have so perfectly contented everybody that even criminality has disappeared. . . Cases of the manifestation of criminality should remain known only to their victims and to chance witnesses -- no more.

Subject: GST attacks the margins of small retailers!

Simpler GST may not be fair

As pensioners and self-funded retirees grow increasingly concerned about parts of the Liberal tax package, one wonders about certain small business operators.

Wholesale Sales Tax (WST) is based on the wholesale selling price of goods. The advantage with this system is that the retail margin does not bear tax. Therefore, certain purchases will not fall by exactly 12 per cent or 22 per cent as stated.

For example, if a top selling brand of chocolate biscuits are purchased by a large supermarket chain for $1.70 (plus WST of 20 cents) and sold at retail for $2.28, the tax component of the retail price is only 9%. If the same biscuits were sold for $2.75 by a high mark-up convenience (or small country) store, only 7.3% of this retail price is sales tax.

In contrast, the 10% GST is passed onto the consumer on the entire retail price.

After the changeover, the large retail chain may sell the biscuits for $2.29, and the convenience store will attempt to sell them at $2.80. With GST, the large supermarket gets away with only paying 22.9 cents on the biscuits, but the small store gets hit for 28 cents GST. This raises some important questions.

Does this mean that GST discriminates against the margins of small business owners (who generally operate small independent stores) in favour of big business? Does this mean that consumers in country areas who try to support their small local store end up paying more tax to the Government on their goods than their city counterparts? If so, then not everyone is a winner with the GST.

Steve

Subject: Costello the clown

What a fool Peter Costello is. In response to criticism of the tax package by AACOSS, he claimed that the GST was fair because the rich spent 2.x% more on 'food, including restaurants' than did the poor. He deliberately confused 'food' and 'food, including restaurants' and expected people not to notice.

Anybody with half a brain knows that it is a simple matter to exclude food and include take-away and restaurants in a GST. Most countries with a GST do exempt food. But Australia is so broke we have to tax bread and milk. No matter how poor people are, no matter if they don't even earn an income, after a GST they will pay a hefty tax.
