The Au$3 billion Nathan Dam (multi-national) project was clinched without going to tender
How do you get work from the Queensland State Government? Easy if you are a multinational - based on the Nathan Dam experience.
While small business in Queensland has to go through a rigorous tender process with a minimum of three tenderers for work over Au$1,000 multinationals simply use their lobbyists and contacts to secure the rights to multi-billion dollar projects.
Furthermore, the timing of approval for the Nathan Dam project to proceed, just days after the United Nations hammered out an agreement making fresh water a "commodity" is just a trifle too cute.
The dirty waters become even grubbier when you realise that consultants working for the multinationals were paid Au$2 million (in state taxpayers money) to guide the Government through "a minefield of negotiations".
Economic and Trade Minister, Doug Slack, yesterday dismissed criticisms saying, "This was a uniquely Queensland approach which the Federal Government has endorsed. It was really left up to the private sector's creativity and ingenuity to determine how to proceed."
About 300 groups which expressed interest were narrowed down to 25 with their plans being presented without any tendering process being involved.
"We raised issues about what it was they really wanted to do, what sort of backing they had, what would happen under certain circumstances. The major concern of the team was that there was no revelation of information between each consortium."
The process resulted in multinationals Sudaw Developments Limited being given the project.
Murrandoo Yanner foiled, for now
Yanner, who initiated a court action stopping a bridge being built over the Gregory River has been foiled for now. The Federal Court in Sydney yesterday lifted an injunction halting work on the bridge. Justice Bryan Beaumont set a date for a hearing on May 20-22 to hear the case but has allowed work to be restarted in the interim.
A few days ago we covered how Yanner had used tax payers money to bring the action against Century Zinc. In the statement of claim by the Carpentaria Land Council (CLC) Yanner, the council's co-ordinator, claimed that the bridge would "disturb significant Aboriginal sites"... starting to sound like the Hindmarsh Bridge fiasco now isn't it?
Grubby Internationalists found out yet again
Last year when Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad gave his now infamous speech to the World Bank in Hong Kong he was slated by the Murdoch papers as being out of touch with reality - stating the well-rehearsed line that globalisation is unstoppable.
Quote from that speech: "The traders apparently make billions with each transaction. But when the funds at their disposal is huge and they are in a position to influence the values of the currencies with their investments and divestments then the currency market become cash cows to them. They cannot fail to make a profit whichever way the index goes."
Now it would appear that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agrees with Dr Mohamad following the Asian currency meltdown. Their latest report vindicates him stating that his belief that currency trading or "manipulation" was the main cause of the economic crisis in Asia. Dr Mohamad was addressing a seminar on virtual reality yesterday when he advised that he had a copy of the IMF report.
He said, "But developed countries may not want to take action as their economies are not threatened like ours and they could have actually gained (from currency speculation)".
Dr Mohamad said that hedge funds controlled more than US$100 billion worldwide while banks held US$23 trillion and that with these massive funds it was "difficult for a government like Malaysia to defend itself" from speculators.
"We have only about US$20 billion in reserves," Dr Mohamad said.
Dr Mahathir said that "virtual money" used in electronic currency trading severely damaged "real money, real jobs and real business".. "A host of catastrophes befall people - real people, not virtual people"... adding that whole countries (like Indonesia) had been impoverished by currency trading.
He added that banks and businesses were bankrupted, millions of workers thrown out of secure employment and high inflation resulted in food and medicine becoming a commodity that people could no longer afford.
The ALP and the wharfies
The old yellow bellies are coming out of the woods again. Led by Kim Beazley the Australian Labor Party (ALP), who have been remarkably quiet about the plight of the wharfies to date, the big boys have rolled out on to the public forum once again proclaiming the action by the Federal Coalition Government on the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) workers as bad.
Why the quiet from the ALP until now? Quite simply because it appeared up until Thursday that the MUA would quietly disappear from the scene and that Patrick would run the docks with non-union labour. On Thursday a massive show of support by other unions changed the picture and now Patrick are talking about closing down their operations in certain ports.
While I do not support the MUA under most circumstances the alternative, at this stage, is worse. It is blatantly obvious that the union busting operation is being funded by one or more multinational companies with the sole intention of taking over our dockyards. Under these circumstances I support the MUA because they stand between our Australian docks remaining Australian owned and being owned by multinationals.
When Pauline Hanson's One Nation comes to power I would see the liberalisation of the docks from the MUA being a key objective - but with Australian interests maintaining control of this key bastion of our economy. Australians have, for too long, been held to ransome by the MUA and their overpaid workers but right now the life and death struggle on the docks is not about unions it is about foreign ownership.
Under the circumstances I support the union battle... because we have already lost too much of our industry to foreign interests under the bi-partisand Coalition and ALP governments... the tweedle-dum and tweedle-dee of politics.

Hanson to take the balance of power in the Queensland state election
Yesterday we reported on a leaked ALP survey which showed Pauline Hanson's One Nation could take three key seats in the upcoming state elections.
Because the survey was taken by the ALP the Coalition leader, Rob Borbidge, poo-pooed the results saying that they were "unreliable" and that "One Nation had nowhere near the extent of the support". However, today Borbidge refused to comment when a new research by A C Nielsen taken on behalf of the Courier Mail showed the following results:

Significantly, there has been a further 7% swing of voter support for Pauline Hanson's One Nation since the last Courier Mail survey was made just two months ago.
Opposition leader Peter Beattie said that the polls showed that One Nation was devastating the National Party in the bush after the Nielsen survey revealed that 64% of One Nation supporters have defected from that party.
Personally, I think that Beattie is going to get a big shock when thousands of ALP voters also vote fro One Nation on the day. After all it was just last Tuesday that News Limited's The Australian trotted out the comment that support for One Nation was dying....

I don't think I've ever heard of a policy so close to the heart of so many Australians. We are just itching to endorse this brilliant woman and her total commitment to us. It is such a refreshing thing,....a politician who actually responds to the people of this wonderful country.
Think of it....in one year!!!!! a grass roots democratic movement has exploded onto the Australian political scene and is rocking the corrupt establishment to the core!!!! While they flounder hopelessly , witness the waterside fiasco, to do the bidding of the new world order and its multinational hierarchy, someone who simply reflects the views and aspirations of ordinary Australians,....is rocketing into prominence and threatening their very existence. How fitting!! How apt...and how lucky we are to have her here!!!
Long Live Pauline Hanson!!!
She is collecting votes like the quickening rain. The downpour will wash Canberra clean!
