Commonwealth sued for Carmen Lawrence's legal bills

Seems like the legal firm which represented former Western Australian Premier Carmen Lawrence before the Easton Royal Commission is suing the Commonwealth over unpaid legal bills.

The Federal Court in Sydney has been told the firm, Dunhills, is still to be paid more than half a million dollars - with Carmen defaulting on her debt.

Readers might recall that the Royal Commission was set up by the Western Australian Government following the suicide of lawyer Penny Easton who had been the subject of a petition tabled in Parliament.

Dr Lawrence, who was the Federal Health Minister at the time, unsuccessfully challenged the validity of the commission all the way to the High Court. Dunhills claims the former Keating Government (read Australian taxpayers) agreed to pay Dr Lawrence's legal costs from the Royal Commission and her court challenges. While $320,000 has been paid, $560,000 remains outstanding.

The Commonwealth is expected to argue that no agreement was made to cover costs incurred outside the Royal Commission.

Public service apologises for its role in 'stolen generation'

The Public Service Association's (PSA) president Maurie O'Sullivan has used its centenary celebrations today to apologise for the role it may have played in the 'stolen generation'.

But he says he does not believe current members of the association were involved in taking Aboriginal children from their families.

"I didn't do that, nobody in the room here did that," he said.

"I doubt there would have been any public servants around the traps today who may have been involved in implementing such policies but let me say again more publicly than before for those who would have pursued those policies to the Aboriginal people and to the world, I'm sorry."

Indigenous Land Council...

Why were the Land Fund and the ILC established?

In 1993 the Commonwealth Government promised to enact a three-stage response to the decision of the High Court of Australia in the Mabo case in 1992, which first recognised native title in Australia and the prior ownership of this land by indigenous peoples.

The three-stage response was to have been:

The Government recognised that the majority of indigenous Australians have been dispossessed of their land and would be unable to regain ownership and control of their land through native title processes. The Land Fund was therefore established to complement the Native Title Act as a means of addressing the widespread dispossession of indigenous peoples.

Lesson forgotten by us - WorldNet Daily

Here is an extract:

The Chinese military have studied American military actions and capabilities intensively since their preparations leading up to their entry into the Korean conflict. There they fought us to a stalemate, first by overwhelming us with effective if relatively unsophisticated tactics, and next because we elected not to use our superiority in air, naval and nuclear capability against their base in China itself. Public representations to the contrary notwithstanding, they teach their military trainees and their schoolchildren that we, the United States, are "the enemy." Under this administration their operatives have been brought into our Department of Defense and into all branches of our military operations, where their aggressive intelligence gathering has become legendary. Under their system, moreover, all "students" in this country, and there are thousands, are also assigned to the care of party or government overseers and are used to gather intelligence.

One Nation not alone in its views

Paul Hellyer, leader of the Canadian Action Party, is calling for the elimination of the external debts of developing countries, qualifying the actions of the International Monetary Fund as "criminal".

Toronto the 12 of March, 1999. In his most recent book, "STOP: THINK", Paul Hellyer says that only radical action will prevent another economic Depression. The well-known former Minister of State, author, and former journalist suggests that the year 2000 will be the ideal year for the renewal of the world financial system.

Radical change is necessary for those developing countries which suffer a burden of debt far surpassing their capacity to pay it off. Without a massive writing off of these debts, those countries will be condemned to perpetual poverty. Developing countries require new economic policies if they are to promote some semblance of justice and equal opportunity for their citizens. Laissez-faire policies will not create the necessary jobs for those who have been marginalized due to automation and the displacement of capital to sources of cheap labor. It is therefore necessary for government to assume the role of social arbiter in order to assure its citizens a proper standard of living. For government not to assume this role will mean the permanent impoverishment of large sectors of society.

Paul Hellyer views "mainstream" economists with a critical eye, accusing them of being locked in to the "religion" of laissez-faire ideology and so, unable to learn from the lessons of the past. Since laissez-faire is a step backward toward those policies which helped cause the Great Depression, it should be called "retro-classical" economics instead of "neo-classical" economics. The IMF"s insistence in imposing this model on developing countries is nothing short of "criminal". The harm that has been caused to the populations of developing countries is incalculable. It is why Paul Hellyer states that only a massive write-off of external debt will allow these countries to once again take their future into their own hands.

It is a call to halt the process of financial globalization which Mr. Hellyer qualifies as the attempt by the five great economic powers to ensure that their economic supremacy can never be challenged: the old kids do not want any new kids on the block. By impeding the growth of developing countries, their own economic supremacy is ensured. It is a matter of irony that these great powers whose own wealth was gained behind protective tariffs today deny that same protection to developing nations.

The long list of changes proposed by Paul Hellyer include the abolition of the IMF and the World Bank; that the banks be obliged to increase their reserves to 50% of actual deposits over a period of fifty months;that the money created by such actions be used to eliminate most of the debt of developing nations.

This initiative should be headed by the United States both because it is the economic hegemony of the world economy and therefore bears a particular moral responsibility for the commonwealth of nations and because such an initiative is in the own best interests of the U.S. If the United States refuses to undertake this initiative, then Paul Hellyer suggests that Third World countries as a block "refuse to pay their external debt until the G7 leaders finally see the light."

Paul Hellyer will be leaving on an international tour to promote his book and its suggestions in April. The tour will take him across Canada, the United States, England, New Zealand, and Australia. Mr. Hellyer will be a guest speaker at the People's Summit Conference which will take place in Sydney, Australia under the theme, "The People Against Financial Globalization."

The Canadian Action Party and its leader, the Honorable Paul Hellyer, pledge their support to all those governments and institutions of the developing nations in their attempt to create economic programs geared to their own national interests. The President of the Quebec Wing of the Canadian Action Party, Mr. Bruce Katz, has also called on regional organizations to unite forces in order to bring pressure upon the Canadian government to work towards alleviating the external debt of the developing nations.

Courier-Mail desperate

Hi Scott,

Well well, so the Courier Mail are trying to whip up support for the megalomaniacal Jeremy Jones now eh!

They must be really desperate to offer such support to such a "high profile baddy" as Mr Jones, and how one sided can they get?. Where is the victory in exposing only one side to an argument?. This must be our que to expose Jeremy for what he is. Namely a sly, cunning, conniving New-World-Order-Attack-Poodle.

Apart from the need to expose Mr Jones for his Nazi-Style tactics in opposing One Nation, he should be exposed for the gamut of his bad behaviour in order to protect ordinary decent (non-Talmudic) Jews from the inevitable consequences that would follow Mr Js persistent refusal to give up when he is beaten. Likewise I would say it can only be a matter of time before people stop buying the C.M.

I am sure it is as repugnant to others as it is to me to witness that no argument can ever get off the ground whilst insult hurling remains preferable to dialogue and discussion. But of course that is why these people do it isn't it?

As for J.J's assertion against the Adelaide Institute, (that they promote hate speech) I would like to say that as one who is familiar with the site and the work of Frederick Toben, it is not hate speech that concerns Mr Jones. It is the fact that like others he (Toben) has done a good deal of research into the so called "The Holocaust". He does not speak hatefully toward Jews or anyone else.

Mr Jones is part of an International push to have "The Holocaust" established as a new World-Religion. Currently he is assisting his allies in Canada to make free-speech in that country a thing of the past. By his own admission he has our country in his sights next.

If people like this weren't so powerfull they'd be good for a real belly-laugh, but unfortunately while most of us slept, these sort of people have gained an iron grip over our whole infrastructure. Mr Jones and his disgustingly pompous Australian Council of Executive Jewry were influential in cajoling our government into denying David Irving the right to enter Australia and likewise in denying all Australians the right to hear this world famous historian speak and then make up their own minds!

Now he yaps at Scott because Mr Jones cannot stand to think that now anyone can reach the world via the internet, without the need for mega-bucks, leaving it a free for all for us prolls and that's what Mr Jones hates. Wake up Australia! Yesterday; several thousand O.N members, today Ernst Zundel and David Irving, tomorrow Frederick Toben, the day after that Scott Balson?, and the following day you and me and all the other ordinary Australian folk?

What will you do for free speech today?.

I've only got one more thing to say to Mr Jones and the Courier Mail at the moment; "Eat my Shorts"

David Morgan.

My right of reply was declined... have put in a complaint to the Australian Press Council.

NSW Election and PC

Hah! The NSW state election is less than two weeks away and the former NSW Liberal Party leader Peter Collins must be privately gloating. Last December the Libs caved in to political correctness and dumped him though he seemed to be a decent sort of man. And for whom? A woman of course!

But Chicka-Chicka-boom-boom (Kerry Chikarovski) has not delivered the goods. The Libs have taken a big dive in the polls. Good. Maybe it might yet sink in to these political morons that voters are not really into PC froth and bubble. Let alone bribes, and I think that is what sank Chika.

Believe it or not, she promised $1,000 cash or $1,100 in shares for every voter (household?) from the privatization of the NSW electricity industry if she was elected. How gross, how rude, how insulting can you be to your constituents.

Treasury conspiracy?

Omega’s letter from 16th March in ANOTD was interesting but puzzling to me. There is continual reference of Treasury conspiracies even back to the introduction of the Double Taxation Agreement Bill in 1953.

To my knowledge, Treasury in the early 1980s was putting on the brakes to economic reforms and resisting moves such as floating the dollar.

Prior to Paul Keating's announcement of floating the dollar on 9th December 1983, Treasury Secretary, John Stone was dead set against the move. Stone said the dollar would become a speculators' toy; it was inappropriate for a nation of Australia's size to float its currency; the exchange rate was a weapon of policy and should never be surrendered to the markets.

It was people such as Paul Keating and Hawke's economic advisor, Dr Ross Garnaut who were actively pushing the float.

Later Stone made a turnaround praising the floating of the $A, but at the time his position as Treasury Secretary was on rocky ground with pressure from key players for Keating to sack Stone.

Four Corners report on East Timor

Dear Scott,

Anyone who watched 4 Corners last night ( MON 15/3/99 ) would appreciate the magnitude of the problems facing the people of East Timor as they move towards the referendum which will decide East Timor and it's peoples' independence and stature in the global order.

One part of the report of which I have many concerns with, relates to the ethics of the ABC showing footage of Timorese villagers pleading with the journalist and cameraman not to film for fear of a reprisal attack from Pro Indonesian integrationists. They were told would in a most animated fashion that integrationist forces would murder dissenters and destroy the village if anyone was found talking to the media. Despite these pleas from villagers the ABC continued to film without any effort to conceal the identities of those involved and aired the footage on national television.

I hope the claims of a swift and violent reprisal to these now compromised villagers proves false.

Queer life at a school near you

Hi Scott,

Well , I'm glad to see that Paul Canning agrees with the thrust of my message, that the homosexual lifestyle is promoted in Queensland schools. And I notice he didn't defend the calendar that I mentioned that was handed to school children which contained "how to" sex, "how to" drugs, and a steroid dose chart in it, and references to homosexuality throughout. For example "We do all sorts of things. We are all different, but we are all queer. Whatever you do, when it comes to sex, drugs and everything, remember you are queer and you are excellent!"

Maybe Paul Canning would like to ring Mr. Murray Briggs, the media spokesperson of the Queensland Teachers Union to support my charges and inform him that homosexuality is promoted in our schools. Because Mr. Briggs is under the impression that it isn't. He guaranteed me.

Have a good one,
Ridge.

Homosexuality

Some recent correspondants to @notd seem to be getting themselves confused about the level of "choice" associated with homosexuality. This isn't surprising. Gay people are always saying that they didn't have a choice to be gay - they were just born that way. However, government legislation tells us that it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of "sexual preference", which implies that some choice is available.

I personally do not believe that the majority of gay people have any choice in their sexual preference. Maybe there is a small percentage of bisexual people who can be persuaded to turn one way or the other, but I don't believe that most people could be persuaded to change their sexual orientation. I certainly couldn't. The very idea of homosexual sex turns my stomach.

Homosexuality is obviously unnatural. Many people don't think that it is an illness, because a cure has not been discovered yet. Using the same logic, does that mean that cancer is not really an illness?

Homosexuality is a mental illness, most likely linked to genetics. I disagree with anybody who says that they hate homosexuals. I ask them: would you hate anybody who had schizophrenia? Would you blame them for having a mental illness?

Having said that, it is bizzare that gay people seem obligated to organise mardi gras to celebrate their own mental illnesses. I can't imagine schizophrenics doing the same thing. Can you imagine it? A schizophrenic marching down a Sydney street, chanting "I'm a schizophrenic, no I'm not!"

Debt? What debt?

Hardly a debt at all.

"The Land Fund is a perpetual fund which will always remain the property of the Commonwealth. In 2004, Government allocations to the Land Fund will cease, but funding to the ILC will continue from investment income earned by the Fund."

Which reminds me, to sign on to the grassroot Apology to our indigenous fellow-Australians, go to
