Welcome to our new weekly segment,

Australian News of the Day Media Watch

International:

Independent member for Oxley, Pauline Hanson, who has been continually slated by the media as a racist asked a rather telling question in Parliament today. After being associated by the media "as the background cause" of the "racist" abuse dealt out to a group of Singaporeans she asked, "Is it a fact that the attack on the Singaporean defence personnel was carried out not by white Australians inflamed by me and condoned by you, but by a group of Aboriginals where alcohol was involved on both sides?"

The Prime Minister seemed less than willing to give a straight answer....

Ms Hanson went on to say to the Prime Minister, "Are you aware of the political and media criticism that you are getting for not condemning me for remarks I have not made and views I do not hold?"

Queensland police sources confirmed yesterday that they were investigating claims Aborigines were involved in an attack on Singaporeans in October. This information was withheld because government ministers decided last week, after media reports appeared linking Ms Hanson's comments to the attacks, that the news would have the potential of creating a backlash against Aborigines.

You might recall it was only a few days ago that my step daughter's party was attacked in an unprovoked attack by a group of Aboriginal descent, and the well meaning response received. But have Australians just had enough of this behaviour?

More importantly have Australians had enough of the slanted reporting by our mainstream media and is the "cotton-glove" approach to all matters Aboriginal behind the "backbone of support" that Ms Hanson is receiving? Generally, I think so.

You might also recall that it was not long after this blatantly false reporting by our Australian mainstream media on the Singaporean "racial incident" in late October that the "Hanson story" started appearing in Asian papers and Asians started cancelling their holidays to Australia.

So the question SHOULD be... is it the media who are damaging our relations with our Asian neighbours and should they be pulled in before the Federal Parliament and cautioned to get their facts right?

Political:

China's state controlled media has taken a pot shot at our Prime Minister for his "parrot-like" support for the United States.

The Guangming daily, a prominent Beijing paper, suggests that the Chinese government's stance against Howard was firming. It also said that Australia's failure to gain a position in the United States Security Council was linked to "its intimate relationship" with the United States.

"When the United States launched an air attack on Iraq, Canberra was unusually eager to ape Uncle Sam at every step, and became one of the few countries to express full support for the military action."

I read your gwb for the first time today

Keep up the good work!

PS My daughter also was attacked by a group of aboriginals in Townsville about a year ago. Broken teeth, etc She was sitting in a taxi at the time and was assualted thrugh the open window! The only good part of the story is that the same girl who hit her without any provocation was subsequently attacked by another of her ilk a week later. I have no answers either. But it is a real ongoing problem here in north Queensland.
