International:

Well a year after the trouble over native title really started Century Zinc finally got its go ahead yesterday when the 12 indigenous claimants signed the agreement.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) deputy chair, Sugar Ray Robinson, handed the signed document over to Queensland state premier Rob Borbidge ensuring that the Au$1.1 billion project can proceed.

Borbidge said, "I think a lot of people will be entitled to just a slight drink tonight."

The state cabinet is set to re-introduce its Au$30 million compensation towards the Au$90 million package for Aborigines affected by the mine.

It is now seven years since the worlds largest zinc body was first uncovered and both Liberal and Labor state governments have been trying, since then, to get an agreement signed with the local Aborigines.

Robinson said, "On behalf of the claimants and Aboriginal people in the Gulf area, I think this is an opportunity for employment, training and jobs and it shows that Aboriginal people can negotiate as far as native title claims are concerned."

After the latest Morgan poll showed One Nation support climbing ever higher (see below) in Australia Prime Minister Howard called Ms Hanson divisive...

"I would say to some of those people who see in the simplistic nostrums of somebody like Pauline Hanson some kind of alternative deliverance from some of the current-day difficulties to understand that she doesn't have all the solutions at all," Howard said.

"I haven't heard her articulate one intelligent alternative."

Mr Howard also expressed great concern about the actions of the protesters at Geelong on Monday night saying that it only served One Nation's cause.

Federal Opposition spokesman for industrial relations, Bob McMullan, also spoke out yesterday saying, "Ipswich is a working class city, but Ms Hanson has not defended the workers in her electorate in the face of fundamental attacks on their interests," he said.

And in Brisbane an Asian born student claimed to have been subject to racist abuse and property damage - because of Ms Hanson. The letter, read by none other than Brisbane's Lord Mayor Jim Soorley said, "Unfortunately we have been subject to random attacks, such as throwing of eggs at our windows and walls, spraying swastikas on the walls, and removal of our house number."

Here are the latest Morgan Poll results:

PartySupportChange
Coalition42%+2%
Australian Labor Party30%-4.5%
One Nation13.5%+3.5%
Democrats7%-.5%
Support for One Nation by state is as follows: Queensland 21%; Tasmania 17%; South Australia 12%; New South Wales 11%; West Australia 8%; Victoria 7%.

Political:

Senator Mal Colston resigned as deputy Senate President yesterday just minutes before the Senate sat.

The resignation letter was handed Senate President Margaret Reid's office at 12.28pm by Colston's wife Dawn.

The Senate voted the ALP's Sue West to take over his position just minutes later.

The leader of the Senate, Robert Hill, took the opportunity to thank Senator Colston for the work that he had done as deputy president saying, "I wish to show my appreciation of the work conducted by Senator Colston.

"I trust that the matters that overshadow Senator Colston at the moment might be resolved to his satisfaction."

Opposition leader Kim Beazley was more forthright saying, "Mal - outski. Out of Parliament, old son."

Well I really don't know or care whether Pauline is racist or not.

I drive a Taxi, and am sick of risking a charge of racial discrimination every time I refuse an aboriginal (or other minority race) on the grounds that they have just drank away the last of their pension cheque.

I am sick of the police shaking their head every time I mention that a fare evader was Aboriginal.

Has anybody ever noticed those police with the yellow tabs in Brisbane? They're especially appointed to deal with Aboriginals...Why?

Why are drunken whites taken to the watch house, whilst Aboriginals are taken to 'Murray Watch'?

Why can police only detain Aboriginals a fraction of the time they can detain whites?

Why are Aboriginals entitled to cheap housing loans?

What's the difference between AUSTUDY and ABSTUDY?

Do they still have the 'Aboriginal or TSI only' cards at the CES?

Call me stupid but I thought Pauline wanted to abolish ATSIC, thus leaving Aboriginals equal to us. This doesn't sound racist to me.

Cameron.

To all at Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party - Please keep up the good work. All our extended family greatly admire a large percentage of what you stand for (your alliance to the Gun Lobby would be an exception). However, there again no political party is a hundred percent perfect for everyone.

We were particularly angry to hear MR KENNETT maligning you and saying that this was the problem with democracy - this from a man who recently appeared in court to vouch for honesty of a man convicted of stealing approximately four and a half million dollars. A man I might add, who had ample funds to pay for an extremely good defence, and was still found guilty.

I intend to finish reading your webb page shortly, but I do hope that there will be a way for the people of South Australia to become members of your party. I would like to see members stand in the State elections as well as Federal. As you are no doubt aware, we have an election due shortly and it would be an excellent opportunity to show the current politicians just how much support you have.

We have still not seen or heard anything from yourself or your party which we would term as racist. As we all know, present policies are racist.

Sincerely
Danny Jones

Subject: Once Nation Party

What are your policies on immigration? How do you propose to sustain economic growth without it? Or is it that you just oppose Asian immigration? Wouldnt that be racist? I thought you claimed not to be racist?

Give us some solutions, not just problems, you mob of rednecks!

BTW I do not condone the violence and abuse at your meetings.

The following offensive "greeting card" was sent to Ms Hanson by a student at the University of Queensland. Please note before accessing this link ("Your Secret Admirer" below) that it, like the student is crude, rude and disgusting.

Another magnificent day in paradise after some light rain overnight...

One to be enjoyed on the Gold Coast.
