Issues - The banking system under the spotlight.

International:

In the peaceful city of Perth - famous for being the most isolated city in the world... a new terror walks the streets at night.

Police fear that a serial killer now lives there after a third young woman disappeared on Friday night/early Saturday morning.

The woman, a 27 year old solicitor, Ciara Glennon, disappeared after leaving the popular Bayview Terrace cafe and bar strip. She went to the Continental Hotel in Claremont with workmates from Perth law firm Blake Dawson Waldron. Glennon had just returned from a 12 month trip around Europe and was staying with her parents in Mosman Park before her disappearance.

Last year two women were murdered after being abducted in Claremont. A childcare worker at Wembley, Jane Rimmer, was murdered in June last year after leaving the Continental Hotel and a teenager from South Perth, Sarah Spiers, disappeared while visiting Claremont in Janauary last year.

State crime squad commander Bob Ibbotson said, "She is a solicitor... a professional. She wouldn't do this to her parents, I'm sure.

"She had been overseas for some time and returned only fairly recently which may have some bearing on her not taking enough precaution."

Bruce Sims, general manager of ATSIC funded Magabala Books believes that the men behind the "Great White Hoax" are finished in Australian literary circles.

For a part-time cabbie, Leon Carmen did a fine job of impersonation supported by his agent John Bayley. But Sims reckons that anyone who published any further works for the two would be "despicable".

The book "My Own Sweet Time" has now been withdrawn from sale.

Miners at the opal mining town of Lightening Ridge have gone into a state of panic after a native title lands rights claim has been made by Aborigines over the entire mining area. Over 6,000 people employed in the area are now under threat of becoming unemployed while the case is heard through the courts.

Where the heck is Howard and his "amendments" to native title - he better be quick. Just now a claim will be put on the Internet!

Political:

New South Wales MP Franca Arena yesterday threatened to expose several public figures she alleges are linked to paedophilia allegations unless the state's Wood Royal Commission and police investigate the claims.

Politicians, lawyers and businessmen are among those expected to be named by Arena.

Mrs Arena came under attack from both sides of politics after naming former Justice Yeldham in Parliament. 67 year old Yeldham committed suicide four days later by gassing himself in his car. It subsequently appeared that Yeldham had lived a double life and had preyed on young men who visited a men's toilet in a railway station.

Extensive political commentary and links can be found on Palmer's Australian Politics page.

Sport:

He failed once again! Australian cricket captain Mark Taylor scored just 13 runs before being trapped lbw in his second innings against South Africa. South Africa were all out for 168 in their second innings - leaving Australia 270 runs to win.

It was left to Mark Waugh and Matthew Elliot to kick along Australia's chances - a job that they did very well. At close of place Australia were poised for a win with 3 wickets down for 145 runs....

Social:

It is time for the male species of the world to rebel in much the same way that the feminists have to forever change our society and their role in it.

Why? Well in Japan female researchers supported by teams in Australia and the US have perfected a fertilisation technique which would make males redundant in an "all-woman" world.

The Japanese researchers have succeeded in creating "virgin births" in cows. Yamaguchi University project leader Tatsuyuki Suzuki said the technique could be applied to any species.

The technique involves removing unfertilised egg cells from cows, bathing them in alcohol, then in a series of chemicals which stimulate their development into embryos. The embryos are then returned to the womb.

Instead of two sets of chromosomes, one from and one from the mother, they all come from the mother and there are only female off spring.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another gorgeous day in paradise with sunny skies after a cool night - temperatures getting as low as 14 degrees celcius.

Have a great day!
