Issues - The banking system under the spotlight.

International:

The new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) chairman, Gatjil Djerrika, has referred more than Au$2.5 million in ATSIC commissioners travel expenses to the Office of Evaluation and Audit "to ensure full accountability".

Federal Government records show that domestic travel expenses by ATSIC commissioners amounted to Au$1.01 million in 1994/95 and Au$1.55 million in 1995/96. During the two year period a further Au$207,225 was spent by ATSIC commissioners in overseas travel.

Four commissioners recorded travel expenses of more than Au$100,000 in the 1995-96 financial year. The largest single claim was by a South Australian commissioner who spent more than Au$54,192 in air fares and claimed Au$68,495 in travel allowances for a total of Au$122,688.

We will watch the results of this with interest.

Political:

Senator Mal Colston has come out fighting after all the allegations being thrown at him - largely by senior politicians within the Australian Labor Party - the party he deserted last year.

In his attack Colston:

The allegations raised are largely targeted at Colston's travel allowances. In the last four years he has claimed Au$117,610 tax free - paid for by Australian tax payers.

Parliamentary records show that he claimed:

The most extreme example of alleged greed is the claim that Colston travelled to Perth and back - waiting in the domestic lounge to catch the return flight - just to collect frequent flyer points!

Subject: Report from Royal Commission

Friday 14th March

The Royal Commission into the existence of Australia's Indigenous People heard today that writer Wanda Katmoordie, artist Eddie Burrup and wine connoisseur Metho Bottlrup were in fact white Australians.

Evidence was also tendered that two former prominent Australian Aboriginal boxers were in fact now living in a defacto relationship as whites in Sydneys Point Piper whilst former Minister for the Arts, Les Patterson had staked a land claim over parts of South Caulfield.

The Commission heard that NIDA (the National Institute for Dramatic Art) was holding regular courses in Aboriginal Culture which were attended solely by white activists. The Real Estate Institute of Australia (Double Bay Chapter) claimed that they represented the lost Garunta tribe who had appointed them as sole selling agents for Sydney's Eastern Suburbs - an area which had long been recognised as having strong spiritual significance to the Garuntas.

Sketches of the Woompah bird and Oombeelica Cord snake were shown to the Commission. Their significance was not explained.

No evidence was tendered to support the oft-quoted claim that there were no aboriginals in Australia and there had never been Aboriginals other than recent graduates of the NIDA classes however no aboriginals turned up at the Commission hearing other than an American Tourist who claimed to be a direct descendant of Chief Sitting Bull.

The Commission sits again next week.

Sport:

Well the Australian cricket team started chirping about how great they were to early - or so it would appear.

First they let South Africa off the hook by allowing them to score 208 runs - after having them on the ropes on the first day, then they were humbled by being bundled out for just 108 runs - with Mark Taylor, once again, failing miserably as a batsman.

He has got to go!!!! 8 runs - that is about his top score all season - and he is one of the opening batsmen....

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another perfectly beautiful day outside with sunny skies and warm, not hot, temperatures.

Heckel, the correla parrot, is chirping noisily at my door seeking attention... maybe the serving on the feedtray is not up to scratch.
