International:

Australia was starting to reap the billion dollar benefits of world trade reform according to Trade Minister Bob McMullan. McMullan's comments centered around the success of the Uruguay round of trade negotiaions aimed at bringing global reform in trade.

A 14 year old schoolboy's prank on the Internet backfired after Australian and American police joined to track him down to his home in a Perth suburb at about 3.30am. The boy claimed to be a suicidal 26 year old in Redmond, Washington state. No charges would be laid!

Political - Federal Election 2nd March 1996:

Well pull out the old blackmail trick. The Prime Minister, fearing a defeat in the March Federal Election, shared the platform with the ACTU secretary (trade union) Bill Kelty yesterday. Kelty threatened to bring the country to its knees if the Coalition won. I have one question for you Mr Kelty - If the Australian public decide they want a Coalition government what right have you to threaten the people's choice?

And for you Mr Keating, - What happened to the values that you expounded a few days ago in relation to honesty - when the Coalition claimed that you were selling off Telstra by stealth?

Business:

The Australian banks are becoming more and more concentrated with the latest move by the National Australia Bank on St George Bank. The NAB has positioned itself for an Au$2.1 billion takeover revealing yestersday that it had now acquired nearly 6% of St George.

Sport:

It now appears that international Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch personally intervened to save the swimming career of Samantha Riley. Take a moment to consider the plight of her coach, Scott Volkers, who now faces bankruptcy in the face of a two year swimming ban that FINA have dumped on him. Seems a bit harsh when you think that all he did was give his swimmer a headache tablet and the Chinese coachs who were blatantly drugging their swimmers on a long term basis were only given a one year suspension!

Social:

Obesity among some races is not due to gluttony or sloth but ethnicity according to a recent study. The study of 82 women focussed on differences between large and small Polynesian ans caucasian women.
The study found that the metabolic rate of Polynesian women was slower than that of caucasians so they used less energy.
Polynesian women also appeared to burn more cabohydrates than fat.

Global Gripe of the day:

Big brother and their big boy games:
Net surfers of 12 months and more might recall the very unpleasant incident where a young Perth student was threatened with legal action because he displayed the official AFL logo while doing a great job promoting this great Australian sport. Wil was our Global Hero in August 1995. His Footy Scandal page reveals a darker side to sport.

Wil in AFL is not alone. There are a number of great unofficial Austraklian Rugby League sporting webs. So when we received this email we thought of Wil, censorship on the net and the closing of doors for those who have done so much to make the net happen.

Subject: Oficial ARL Web site - season 1996

Good morning

My name is xxxxx, an internet consultant with xxxxx.

We have been granted the exclusive rights to author, publish and maintain the official Australian Rugby League WWW site for this year.

Some of your clients will benefit from advertising on this site as there will be interest from Rugby League fans all over the world.

For example, we are look ing for a magor sponsor for the WWW Tipping Competition (interactive, of course) as well as for several other home pages on the site.

Please email me or telephone on XXXXXX to discuss proposals.

Regards
xxxxxxx

So what about all those who covered rugby league last year - or should I say where were you when they were giving rugby league coverage on the Internet last year?

No I am not going to give you any cheap publicity. I will stand for the little guys, like Wil, who made the net happen. Not those who grabbed then strangled the spark of genuine interest of the Aussie battler. The "official ARL site" will not grace our set of links until we are given the assurance that the action taken by the AFL last year will not be repeated against those who have done so much to promote rugby league in the past.

Personal trivia:

Fabulous day yesterday. Went to the big smoke of Brisbane to meet with the Australian Koala Foundation. Fabulous set up and certainly doing great things for the plight of the Australian Koala.
