The Speaker of the House started things off on the wrong foot by fluffing his introduction and the assembled crowd ignored his instructions that clapping was unparliamentary...

The Speaker called on the Prime Minister John Howard to speak as Clinton made his way into the House. Howard retorted, "We've got to wait for him," pointing at Bill Clinton coming through the door - with the crowd bursting into spontaneous laughter and applause.

Clinton praised Australia as a loyal friend of the US and said that a more stable Asia-Pacific region could be achieved through strengthened US security alliances, greater engagement with China and the spread of democracy.

Clinton said, "Today I say again with utter confidence, our alliance is not just for this time, it is for all time.

"I wish I could have come earlier, and I've had so much fun in the last day. I'm amazed that only three American Presidents have come here."

On more important trade issues Clinton promised to try to resolve festering sores in the automotive and farming areas where barriers have badly effected Australia's ability to be competitive and export to the US.

The Clinton's itinerary today is as follows (Australian Eastern Standard Time):

• 2.30pm Address at Mrs Macquarie's chair in the Domain in Sydney.
• 4pm Hillary Clinton delivers a speech at Opera House.
• 7pm The Clinton's depart Sydney.
• 9pm The Clinton's arrive in Cairns in Northern Queensland and meet state premier Rob Borbidge. Helicopter ride to Port Douglas - where they will stay in the Sheraton Mirage Resort.

• He chose Port Arthur site because of its violent history, saying "a lot of violence must have happened there, it must be the most violent place in Australia. It seemed like the right place."
• He planned the massacre for between four to twelve weeks.
• Thought at first he would strangle someone and then decided to shoot, saying, "I thought guns would be better, the more power the better."
• Took delight in tormenting people weaker than himself.
• Has suicidal thought for twelve months before the massacre.
• Admitted he had lived a life without friends and all he wanted was to be liked.
• Was convinced people wanted to hurt him.
• Referred to the killing spree as an "accident".
• Resented David and Sally Martin the owners of the Seascape guest house who he murdered, calling them very mean people.

However, four independent psychaitric reports were tendered to the court yesterday, all agreed that Bryant was not insane and did not suffer from any form of schizophrenia.

Bryant is likely to be imprisoned for the rest of his natural life.
