International:

A Malaysian student leader, Ms Adrina Shazlin Shukor, aged 22, yesterday called on the Malaysian and Australian Governments to protect her and fellow Malaysian students from racial threats after two Australian men hurled verbal abuse at her.

Ms Shukor said she had cried for half an hour after the event - which allegedly took place in Melbourne.

She is the vice president of the UMNO (United Malay National Organisation) Club of Melbourne. The UMNO is the dominant party in Malaysia's ruling National Front coalition led by Dr Mahathir.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this story is that she did not lodge any complaint with the police, speak to any of the media or even let the incident be known in her own circle. She waited until she got back to Malaysia and then went to the Malaysian media with the story.

Of course it has featured prominently in the Malaysian papers.

In the article she is quoted as saying, "They (the Australians) used vulgar words and told me to get out of their country, saying that I was just trash.

"I just froze, scared that they might beat me up."

Ms Shukor states that she stood there for half an hour in the car park until she was joined by Malaysian friends.

Now wouldn't it be interesting to get the other side of this story - from the "Australians involved" - I mean - if it happened I wonder what she said to provoke the incident!

Dr Mahathir has, in the meantime, said that his Government might bring back students who's safety is threatened in Australia.

Personally, I think it would be better if Ms Shukor stayed at home.

Political:

Yesterday we reported that Oxley Independent MP Pauline Hanson had been accused of spending part of her taxpayer-funded electoral allowance to buy a television and a video recorder for her home.

Yesterday she admitted to the fact but said, "I say bring on an inquiry but let's not limit it to just good old Pauline - let's go through everyone and see if there is any truth in the matters raised with me by the public."

She said yesterday that she had been told that certain MPs did not spend a cent of their electorate allowances on electorate business.

"I think that Mr Jull might end up with the biggest can of worms ever opened if just 1% of the allegations that I have received are true," said Ms Hanson. In her own defence Ms Hanson said that her home was used for work as much her Ipswich based office was.

Politicians are free to use their taxpayer-funded allowances, totalling about Au$6.8 million a year, for their own purposes because there are no guidelines and no scrutiny on spending.

The Charles Mannington mystery.

Uncle Nick - counter missionary bot technology expert arrives on the scene, and the Global Info-Links news group heats up as feminism, lesbianism and privacy somehow get caught up in the whole sorry mess.

Got to be seen to be believed!

Business:

What a big financial slap in the face for Kerry Packer - not only from arch-rival Conrad Black but also our very own Australian Federal Government... and that is the bigger surprise!

The Federal Government approved the sale of Black's 25% shareholding in Fairfax to another foreign company - none other than Brierley Investments - a move which netted him a profit of Au$300 million. The sale cost Brierley Au$553.8 million but gave them a powerful hand in the ownership stakes of the group that Packer would so dearly like to control.

Packer already owns 15% of Fairfax and has been targeting a higher shareholding through the current review of media ownership laws.

Prior to this latest sale Packer had been banking on buying the shares "cheap" or doing a share deal with Black. Now he will, based on history, have to pay Brierley Investments top dollar in cash....

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another beautiful day outside with cool overcast weather and the cockatoos having a feast at the feed table.

Have a great day.
