International:

A bogus Queensland lottery has caught thousand of Germans. A Gold Coast company offered prizes up to Au$2.4 million via a computer generated mailing list. The fraudulent postcard says it is an official announcement and that the recipient has won a prize of up to 2.6 million Deutschmark (Au$2.4 million). It requests a payment of D20 (Au$18) to speed delivery.. The Australian embassy there is not amused saying that the scam has damaged Australia's reputation in Germany.

Political:

It is pretty obvious to the man in the street that the federal politicians have established a Christmas truce as there are absolutely no controversial comments or claims or media releases. It takes a lowly state Queensland politician, Kevin Davies ( the Labor fellow who was dumped from Mundingburra by his party in the lead up to the by-election) to dominate the stage. His comments about Wayne Goss is establishing the groundwork for a Labor defeat in that seat in the crucial February by-election. Now there is speculation that Davies WILL run as an independent in an effort to hold the balance of power in Queensland.

Business:

The media manouvering continues with Channel 7 to pay Au$74.8 million fot the Golden West Network (GWN) - rural television in Western Australia. It is an interesting move by a relatively small media player West Australian, Kerry Stokes, who will land up with effective control of 23% of Channel 7. Stokes happens to be the owner of GWN and is the current Chairman of Channel 7 with a 15% interest.

Sport:

Australia dominate again in the cricket with a first innings total of 500 for 6 wickets. David Boon scored 110 and Steve Waugh 131 not out leaving the shaken Sri Lankan team in a no-hope situation. Sri Lankan officials are currently contemplating ending Muttiah Muralidharan's spin bowling career following the previous day's throwing allegations.

Sayonara is still leading the way in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race with Foxtel - Amazon hot on its heels. 6am - Appears that the 1975 race record will not be beaten. 2pm - Sayonara ahead of the 1975 record pace.

Social:

Children in country areas are as likely to have working parents as those in the city a study of parental employment patterns has found. The report found that child care centres were as important to smaller centres as to the larger cities. Canberra topped the bill with 48% of parents with children under 4 years employed - Richmond, a remote Queensland town, had a figure of over 31% in this category.

Personal trivia:

Another superb day in paradise, blue skies with whisps of cloud on the horison riding the rising sun's rays. There is a gentle breeze, but for some obscure reason - no play or song of birds as yet. Guess it is still to early for the sensible animals of the world only single-minded screen heads get up at this unearthy hour. Ah such is my fate...
