International:

Yesterday Liberal Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett's early payment of a massive Au$1.9 billion debt to the Federal Labor Goverenment saved Treasurer Willis from a bucketing... as it helped balance the books. Today Kennett bucketed Willis for cooking the books by using the payment as revenue. One day is a long time in politics

Political:

With claims by the state Liberal party that Ken Davies' silence has been "bought" by the Labor party in the seat of Mundingburra they are now to lodge legal action as the Electoral Act of 1992 forbids candidates asking for or receiving any property or benefit in an attempt to influence them.

Business:

News Limited just keeps getting bigger. The Australian Federal government have approved a deal in which a US$2 bilion investment by MCI Communications Corp in News Limited will be used to provide electronic services worldwide. With News Corp (through Pay TV Foxtel subsidiary) going after all the major international sporting events including the Olympics it looks like the world is not only getting smaller but so are the options for selecting the delivery of content to your home or business.

Sport:

In a surprise move Queenslander Stuart Law - brought in to replace seasoned Australian cricketer David Boon - was dropped and Boon was again brought into the Australian team to play Sri Lanka in Melbourne on Boxing day. Law, in his only test for Australia, made 54 not out... what more do you have to do to keep a place in this team?

Social:

Its out - the sad state of beer drinking in Brisbane. Now one has got to remember that Brisbane is the home of that famous Aussie beer Fosters XXXX . (Well OK it has recently been bought by New Zealand company Lyon Nathan - but I digress). Brisbane is the driest capital city in Australia according to the latest study of the country's pubs. The Australian Bureau of Statistics have released an important study which shows that there are only 14 pubs per 100,000 head in Brisbane - compare that to Hobart where ther are 50. A statistic which needed no explanation was that the highest number of restaurants is in Canberra with 131 per 100,000 head of population. Canberra is home of the Federal Government, well paid bureaucrats and the long lunch.

Personal trivia:

Well what a lovely cool change in the weather today. We have steady rain falling - not that heavy stuff accompanied with lightening, strong winds and blanketing downpours. The family spent the day at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast yesterday while the workers... worked. Ah such is my lot (and I love it ). .
