International:

The Governor General, Bill Hayden, defended his spending policy (Au$12 million in a year). Bill Hayden steps down as Governor in February next year. Word has it that the GG has a reputation for arriving late at major international functions as well.

Political:

The Liberal/National coalition have jumped 10% ahead of the ruling Labor party (55% / 45%) according to the latest Morgan/Gallup poll. The Libs are now wooing small business, pensioners and women in their lead up to the next Federal election.

Business:

BHP have a real problem in Papua New Guinea with environmental damage being caused by the Ok Tedi mine now running into an estimated Au$430 million. The dilemma the country faces is that the mine is a major source of employment and revenue - very important for a small country which is said to be near bankruptcy.

Sport:

The ARL (Australian Rugby League) World Cup team beat New Zealand 30-20 in the semi-finals after having to play extra time. They now face England in the finals.

Social:

Children's rights are forgotten in Australia according to Family Court Chief Justice Alastair Nicholson. He advocates the Swedish system where children can sue their parents if they are smacked as a punishment.

Personal trivia:

What a great day yesterday, I spent it in front of the computer catching up with a week's work after the fun at the exhibition last week. Overnight we had a few nice showers - the first in a couple of weeks. We were woken at 5am (first light) this morning by a large noisy flock of green parrots outside our bedroom. There is a distinct smell of freshness in the air today.
