International:

Korea Zinc Australia are to build a Au$1 billion zinc refinery near the city of Townsville. State Premier Wayne Goss made this announcement with obvious relief as the northern Queensland town just happens to be in the seat of Mundingburra - the seat which labor are going to find very difficult to hold on to in February's by-election.

Political:

The dumped Labor candidate for the seat of Mundingburra has claimed that his old mates went all-out to smear his name when they felt that he could not retain the seat.in February's by-election.

Business:

The Australian dollar closed firmer yesterday as speculation of falling US interest rates hit the market. With the high interest rates in Australia the little Aussie dollar has got to be a good bet for the currency traders.

Sport:

The West Indian cricket team were defeated in a one-day match against Australia last night. The team replied with 225 all out against Australia's 249 for 6. Australians Stuart Law and Michael Bevan were the stars in the Australian team with scores of 74 and 44 not out respectively.

Social:

The little Aussie comedian, Maurie Fields, a legend in Australian laughs has died. "He was an Australian icon", son marty said. Maurie's subtle humour and explosive jokes about all things Australian will be sorely missed on television.

Personal trivia:

Another magnificent day ahead - the sun is shining, the river is clean and the young birds are maturing from little noisy brats to graceful, masters of the air.
