International:

Well, today is the day of that famous people's horse race - The Melbourne Cup. This international event is covered world wide and draws horses from all over the globe. With a first prize of Au$1,300,000.00 the bounty is rich. It is a day for the ladies with exotic outfits and fancy hats being the flavour of the day. However, the weather appears to be against the fashion pundits with rain and heavy going being predicted on the track. If you are a punter the odds are on Double Trigger, however my prediction is that Doreimus will take it out. Gut feel for one who does not bet you understand!.

Political:

Liberal leader John Howard was upset yesterday because the Prime Minister's office did not invite him to go in the Prime Ministerial jet to the funeral of assassinated Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin. Seems that there was no room for the Israeli ambassador either, but, blow me down, how did a television crew get on the flight?

Business:

The UK finance paper The Economist predicted yesterday that Australia was running down the same economic path as Mexico - one of financial disaster. The report was given no credibility by top business people in Australia.

Sport:

Well its Melbourne Cup day,
Previous winners:
1994 - Jeune (20-1 today)
1993 - Vintage Crop
1992 - Subzero
1991 - Let's Elope
1990 - Kingston Rule

Social:

An AC Neilson report shows that Coca Cola was the biggest selling brand in Australia during the 1994/95 financial year with estimated sales of Au$387 million.

Personal trivia:

We had our third major storm in as many days at about 2.30pm yesterday. Hail as big as golf balls covered the lawn and the slopes of the Brisbane River. This morning it is quite still, no wind, no birds singing and an eerie mist in the valley. One can only wonder at the hidden devastation for the chorus of birds I talked about a week ago. So many little chicks must have been lost in the storms - yet as they are not of man no one will ever know the fate they faced.
