International:

Channel Nine exposed its duplicity in reporting today when it ran an extensive report on the SUNDAY program on how badly the Tienamen "dissidents" were treated by the authorities - slamming China for its human rights abuses.

They questioned people on the street in China about the event and the attrocities that followed. Those they interviewed were obviously embarassed and even the reporter said "In China you can never be quite sure who your friends are."

They called the incoming Hong Kong leadership a "puppet regime (of China's)" and questioned Australia's presence at the handover.

Here are some of the questions that the interviewer asked Foreign Minister Alexander Downer during the program...

"So what do you think of the Chinese government then as they are the same men who ordered the soldiers to fire on the students in Tienamen square."

"Why did Australia abandon its support for the UN resolution damning China?"

"But private dialogue isn't going to have China quaking in its boots."

"Do you trust the Chinese government... often what they are talking about might turn out to be something else.."

"What would it take to change your (supportive) views (of China), another Tienamen square....?"

This is the same Packer owned television station that ran a report on A Current Affair slating Ms Hanson for being the biggest peril to Australians doing business in Hong Kong once China takes over next week - because of her racist views... one wonders how the Chinese heirarchy will view Australia after this report. But that's OK Hanson will be blamed anyway.

Prime Minister John Howard slipped while accompanying Bill Clinton to a lunch of prawns, steak and salad. Howard seems to find the worst times to slip... remember that pre-election slip in 1996?

Always caught on camera... always seeming to support the theory that Howard is way out of his depth and flustered.... thus the "little Johnny" Howard tag.

Howard did however to get qualified support after his discussions with his host regarding the greenhouse gas emission cuts being flagged by the European Union.

"The fear I had before I came to the United States was that the whole thing would be sown up in Denver (at last week's world leaders' summit) and that we'd been locked out," Howard said.

"That hasn't happened and that is a cause of great satisfaction to me.

"There is no way that any self-respecting Australian Government could sign up to that sort of thing that the Europeans wanted."

In fact the European Union failed to get endorsement on cuts to current greenhouse gas emission levels - a result it blamed on Australia and the US.
