International:

Surprise, surprise, it is reported today that Queensland's State Foreign Land Register is in absolute chaos.

This follows a statement by the Department of Natural Resources that it could not give accurate information on foreign land ownership in the state.

The register is normally used by corporate lawyers as a statistical database and reveals the billions of dollars of prime real estate now in foreign hands.

In just three local government areas, Cairns, Brisbane and the Gold Coast foreign land ownership is estimated to amount to over Au$6 billion according to the register - but these are 'guesstimates'. Why? Because in recent years several scams have been uncovered involving the transfer of land titles and registering of mortgages over land without the knowledge of the owners. These scams were made possible because of the break-down in the land title system's checking mechanisms.

An example of the mess was uncovered when a local newspaper checked the property ownership of foreign investors who were listed as the third, fifth and sixth largest in the state by the Foreign Land Ownership Register.

The companies, Oban Pastoral Company, the Coolullah Pastoral Company and Western Grazing Co Pty Ltd registered as still owning over 650 sq kilometres of land in north and central Queensland on 24 titles sold all their land at auction in 1992.

Mal Colston's son David came out fighting yesterday when speaking in defence of his father. Colston senior, still in hiding, was represented by his wife Dawn and son David who talked to the media gathered outside their home. David said that Senate president Margaret Reid's conversation with his father while he was still recovering in hospital begged some answers. Senator Reid had promised not to disclose the subject of their conversation but had immediately after done just that.

He also criticised the Senate Clerk Harry Evans and said others "whose cupboards are stacked with skeletons" were likely to get their come-upance. "The hounds which have sought to hound my father out of politics deserve nothing but contempt. While they might mouth "the public interest", they are merely pursuing their own agendas," he said.

David Colston was also scathing about Federal Opposition Labor leader, Kim Beazley's ANZAC day attack on his father saying, "If my father has damaged the fabric of Australian politics, then the Labor Party has driven a semi-trailer through it. Although I am a card-carrying member of the Labor party and believe fervently in the principles for which it stands, the current Federal leadership of the Labor Party has shown itself to be without credibility.

"Instead of attacking the policies of the Government, it has spent the best part of a year relentlessly and single-mindedly pursuing my father, thus squandering many opportunities to win back community sport."

Political:

Well I guess in gambling terms you would call it a trifecta.... but unfortunately this is not a gambling house this is a well orchestrated and carefully planned attack on a duly elected member of Federal Parliament by Murdoch's media.

There was no risk in predicting what would happen or how the journalistic puppets would lick their master's toes in trying to bring Pauline Hanson down. To date they have failed but the Australian public have a right to be concerned.

Yesterday The Weekend Australian (national) and The Courier Mail (Queensland), dedicated pages of divisive, derogatory and misleading articles in the guise of "concern and in the public interest" attacking Ms Hanson and her One Nation Party.

Today the editor of Queensland's Sunday Mail takes up the theme under the heading "Ugly, shabby campaigning".

And I quote:
"Pauline Hanson cannot have it both ways.

"For months she has declaimed that Aborigines must cease harking back to past injustices to justify special treatment today.

"But now she has reached into the past with the gratuitous allegation that Aborigines used to be cannibals who ate their own children.

"Experts have argued about the authenticity of the charge but Senator Bill O'Chee, who has Chinese antecedents and might have good reason to resent the early treatment of Chinese in Australia, says that while references to cannibalism were probably true, they are irrelevant.

"He said the matter should be consigned to the past and left there and he is right.

"The only possible reason for including the cannibalism reference in Pauline Hanson's book was to incite prejudice against Aborigines.

"Ms Hanson's one-woman crusade to save Australia is doing a grave disservice by manipulating the fears and prejudices of specific groups in the community.

"It is a shabby aspect of her campaign that is ugly and demeaning to most Australians."

Page 131 of Pauline Hanson's book, The Truth carries a heading "Pauline Hanson And The Aboriginal Cannibalism Debate: The myth of the 'Noble Savage'", a 5 page section which starts with the following opening paragraph:

World history is full of man's inhumanity to man and Australian history is no exception."

Four of the five pages are dedicated to verbatim extracts with sources from first hand accounts by Hector Holthouse, Daisy Bates and others. Another extract of a first hand report by a current leading Aboriginal appears to confirm the validity of the claims. And really, so what if the Aborigines were cannibals, so were the descendents of most of the world's many tribes and nations.

The point the book is making, which has not been touched on by the media, follows the section as a summation, and again I quote:
"Consideration of such material such as the above refutes the romantic view of the Aborigines held by the new class (the establishment). The Australian Aborigines were hardened survivors in one of the toughest environments on earth. They were not romantic liberals."

The chapter is part of a larger section headed "Surrendering Australia (Mabo, Wik and Native Title)" (From page 109 to 155), and when extracts are taken out of context - as they have been by the media they make as much sense to the point being made by the authors as trying to watch an 18 hole golf match on television with the sound turned off.

When read in context the section does not, in my humble opinion, appear divisive or racist or irrelevant. It is part of the background to the point being made by the book regarding the issue of native title. What is wrong with stating facts if they are relevant to the topic being covered - I know that my forebears were cannibals... so what? Just like the great majority of today's Australian indigenous and other races we are hard working people trying to provide a secure future for our children.

What is divisive, however, is when a few sentences are extracted, taken out of context, and then made into a totally fabricated account to try to discredit Pauline Hanson's One nation party.

Funny isn't it? Pauline supporters sound and act decent and human, yet her opponents spit venom and threaten violence like typical hate-crazed racists. Funny, that.

Subject: Launch of Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party

Hello

I happened to find your page on Pauline Hanson. I Read as much as I could before becoming so disheartened I gave up. I know I am not "racist" I am so sick of that word. Yet I feel the aggressive and disgusting behaviour directed towards your group can only becalled racist itself. Please excuse my poor spelling.

I may not agree with what you say, but I defend to the last your right to say it, with out fear of attack, be it physical or otherwise.

You are so right, we are not One Nation. I hope this may change.

Regards,
Michael.

Here is a post by the same individula on the aus.politics newsgroup under the heading:

Trash, Pauline Hanson and her supporters

"Vrooma" - vroom123@hotmail.com - I cant believe the trash i cant believe the verbal diarrhoea that comes from those of the so called bush...although i refuse to believe as fact that everyone from the bush think like you or are as spiteful, petty, or trivial as you accuse, by your all consuming gripe that would allow you to vote for a spiritualy empty, non christian person who turns her back on the word of the bible of god and christ, who could damage the stability of this previous tolerant society, a wicked mean selfisf spirited person, a user of other peoples monies and user of exhusbands monies to upgrade herself and her social status, a person whom not even her own children love a person such as pauline hanson. I mean not even her own children trust or love her, does that not frighten you, does that not say something to you.

and you would vote for this person, all for the sake of guns.

come on no wonder we shake our heads in disbelief.

i cant believe that out of all the important issues and policies that are wrong, or that need debating and discussion or some explaining and understanding, i cant believe that the sole reason for your desertion of your past political party choice is that there are now strickter gun laws and that means that not every dickhead is going to find it as easy to get hold of a gun.

what the hell is wrong with you, what the hell is wrong with that?? there are two arguments put forward ie the guns laws will not work and anyone who wants a gun can still get one...well if that is the case what is your gripe ...you can still get one the other is that any person in the bush (your description)who can legitimately show cause to use a gun in the bush farm work can apply and own one! well again what is your gripe, what?.. that you have lost the ability to act like cowboys and indians..like hams....like ned kelly....like capone...like hollywood...like REAL men? i mean i cant believe that those issues are of the utmost concern to you considering the state of the world at the moment....it is all so trivial and trashy.

the thing is that you dont sound as radical as some other gun control freaks, you sound angry but you sound just in your own way..

so please consider before you give this woman your support,,,what type of person is she really like and what positive things has she contributed to back up her views, as it is not good enought to back your views with malice you must contribute in a positve constructive way that all australians will benefit...instead of tearing this society apart.

Subject: sponsorship of one nation party

Date: Fri, 25 Apr 1997 13:39:49 +1000

I will tell everyone and every business I know who is thinking of using the services of an organisation such as yours not to given your sponsorship and support of hatred, misinformation and intolerance.

Sally McManus

Our response to Sally:

Perhaps Sally you are the one who is in the dark and misinformed.

All Ms Hanson stands for is a 'fair go for all' - if you took the time to read what she said in the launch of her One Nation Party at:

One nation

you might also ***while visiting the web site*** get the other side of the story which the media conveniently failed to report on. The site carries photos of old men being verbally abused and attacked by the "protestors" at the launch. Elderly women using their democratic right to hear for themselves being spat on and told that they are "SHIT" while running the gauntlet through the protestors to the entrance... but perhaps you don't want the truth - only what you read.

I respect your point of view - just as you should mine. This is a free country in most respects but not all - tragically the most abuse to our freedom is by the trusted media which distort and manipulate facts to satisfy those who hold what we think, see and hear in their grasp.... and there are not many of those who wield that sort of power today.

Have you ever heard anything positive about Ms Hanson in the media... did you know, for example, that her travel expenses are not paid for by tax payers. Did you know that large amounts of money raised at her functions are given DIRECTLY to charities like Meals on Wheels. No - because you don't read about it in the newspapers or see it on the television.

What happened to the Scoop story expose by Four Corners on Kerry Packer a few weeks ago - the ANI and the Sydney Casino.... go visit

Packer Exposed

for a verbatim transcript of the programme... (why is it in the US? Oh dear, think about Australian defamation laws...) now compare the lack of action by the media (both print and television) to the attention given to one Mal Colston....

Fair go... that word was lost long ago when the media proprietors soaked up what was left - and Packer would now own Fairfax... have you ever wondered why Sally? You should be worried, yes, very worried - but not about Ms Hanson who the media proprietors are not able to manipulate like they do the Liberal and Labor parties... thus the relentless vilification. The news you read about Hanson is only "hatred, misinformation and intolerance" because she represents a threat to "their" establishment.

I don't agree with everything that Ms Hanson says but, by God, we better hang on to her or our children will be puppets on a string to the likes of News Ltd and ACP....

Count to ten, visit the web sites and think about it.

Proud to be counted as a supporter of One Nation's principles.

Editor

(Oh and by the way did you know that Mr Kerry Packer is fighting the Australian Tax Office to prevent payment of over Au$140 million in taxes which they claim is due by him... didn't see that on A CURRENT AFFAIR did you - no, just the mickey mouse no hoper who took some money out of half a dozen folks piggy banks... but don't believe me go and look up the following URL which belongs to BRW (A FAIRFAX PUBLICATION) covering Australia's richest 200 on-line:

Packer and the ATO (Now I wonder why Packer wants to control Fairfax... ding! ding!)

But I guess you are one of these people who have blinkers and blinds so high and wide that all that I have said is wasted.
