International:

Lord Mayor Jim Soorley had his rally against racism yesterday. There was no violence, no Hanson "brown coats" or "nazis" storming the meeting. In fact it was the total reverse of the welcome given by abusive protesters when Ms Hanson does come to speak to a group.

However, it was interesting that there was one brave soul, an elderly man, who walked through the crowd with a wooden board bearing the words "Hanson is not a racist". He was abused and even physically attacked by a large group at the rally carrying an Aboriginal flag - as was shown on television this morning.

The abuse was not covered in the newspapers. Somewhat surprising when you consider the attention given to an Aborigine who was simply prevented access to a Hanson meeting not long ago.

Mr Choi, a leading Chinese businessman, spoke to an estimated 2,000 people from mixed ethnic backgrounds saying, "If I am not Australian then why do I get goosebumps when an Australian wins Olympic gold?

"And why do I get tears in my eyes when I hear the national anthem?

"Who am I? Am I not an Australian because "Asians do drugs?" Why should 99% of the Asian community pay for the wrongs of the 1%?

"How many Christopher Skases equal one Dr Victor Chang? How many Asian drug pushers equal one Kieren Perkins? Who is more worthy of being Australian?"

Mr Choi I have in response to your comments total support for you - as someone who agrees with Ms Hanson's view on multiculturalism and the dangers inherent in the policy - what you are saying is that you want to assimilate; you want to be an Australian. We want you! We want you! We want you! - here in Australia.

What Ms Hanson said is that she doesn't want Asian ghettos. She, and the great majority of Australians, don't want mirrored Asian slums in Australia where crime is rife. We want Asians who can assimilate into our society just like the Greeks, the Italians, the Americans and even the black Africans have. We want these people - they are part of our One Nation.

How can you call parts of "Vietnamese" Cabramatta part of Australia. As a "white" Australian you would be foolish to walk along parts of that suburb at night. As a Vietnamese businessman you are faced with bribery and thuggery by groups like the triads. Not even Australian politicians are safe from the Asian crime gangs who rule that suburb.

Cabramatta has more convictions on drug charges than the rest of New South Wales combined - then we hear that New South Wales has lost the drug war!

Assimilation is the word - be part of Australia - not outposts of China, Vietnam, or Korea.

How can that be racist?

Soorley' speech at the rally against racism was full of "political double speak" with comments like "Pauline Hanson is totally un-Australian. She is projecting and spewing out her anger on those who are least able to cope with it - new immigrants and Aboriginals."

Political:

Prime Minister John Howard is stepping up his campaign for a Goods and Services Tax (GST) while stressing that it would not be looked during his "first term in office".

"But I have never said that we would never look at taxation reform," Mr Howard said.

"We would fail the Australian people completely if we turned our backs on the necessity of reform in this very, very important area."

In reply to Subject: Free Speech, saturday 24th may 1997, you said that Pauline's supporters dictate about free speech, well I have one question for you, why do all those that are against Pauline use there right for free speech by yelling filthy abuse, throwing things, throwing themselves at her car, writing discusting signs etc........ and I don't see what you are whining about, I mean every letter that is sent to this page is published be it for or against Pauline Hanson, unlike some other pages on the net.

And you mentioned that her intelligence was eqaul to that of the potatoes she cooks in her shop, well you must have been sleeping for a while because she sold her shop a long time ago. I suggest you do some thinking before you start writing brainless crap.

In future before you open your mouth and put your foot in it again I suggest you read Pauline Hanson's maiden Speech, the real one, not the one the press released (caution there are a lot of words) and if you attend one of her meetings and listen to what she says, you will hear the TRUTH not what the media and a bunch of PAID UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND SOCIAL WORKING DOO GOODERS want you to hear.

Subject: Pauline Hanson It was once said, by Voltaire I believe, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." This is a central element of democratic societies, especially this nation we behold as Australia.

My thoughts are not to wish Ms Hanson ill, nor to support her views, which I believe are half-truths and therefore both enticing but divisive, but to let her, and both her supporters and opponents know the following: I will not tolerate intolerance (yes, a paradigm. Yes an oxymoron).

As far as I believe, and I remain politicaly neutral (mainly because I am not legally an adult), it is the duty of anyone espousing 'the truth' to hear, like Solomon, both sides of the argument without becoming defensive, myopic or aggresive.

This is not an attack on the person of Ms Hanson or her protestors or supporters.

I believe, please correct me if my logic is wrong, that if Ms Hanson uses her free speech in halls across Australia, proclaiming her policies and her truths, it is not only just but inevitable that others would then do the same.

I implore you all to behave not out of anger, fear, ignorance, belligerance, arrogance or a sense of righteousness; but rather act in a way so that when I am able to use my right of free speech I will not pay the price for your folly.

I ask you to be unbiased.
Yours in Christ,
Shannon Donahoo (age 17)

Business:

Canadian owner of Australia's Channel Ten television station, CanWest, wants to know how the changes to media ownership are going to affect its shareholding in the station as soon as possible.

CanWest's chairman Izzy Asper said yesterday, "Cross-media ownership is important. If it is going to be put on the back-burner, then an incoming investor needs to know that.

"...and no-one is going to make a decision until all the balls come out of the air.

"If CanWest is going to be harried out of the country, drawn, quartered and exported, that's something else after now.

"If CanWest is prepared to make a renewed commitment, that's something they want to know. Are we here for the long ride?"

Sport:

The Australian cricket team (minus Mark Taylor - who was dropped) lost the third and final one day match against England at Lords yesterday.

It was a very good match with Australia again losing the toss and being sent in to bat. The Aussies reached 270 under captain Steve Waugh but were unable to stop England topping the score with just an over to spare.

A whitewash 3-0 in favour of the English in the Texaco One Day competition.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another perfect day in paradise.

Have a good one.
