Comment from the independent Strategy newspaper (May 1997):

Under article "The reality of Mabo" Aboriginal Nation States: "The Daily Telegraph (02/03/97 - Piers Akerman) that "the United Nations is paving the way for Australia to be divvyed into a number of nation states governed by Aborigines".

This will be the end result of the implementation of the "The United Nations Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples".

The draft comprises 45 articles and is being put forward as the "minimum" expected for the "survival, dignity and well-being of indigenous people of the world... by giving them self determination by allowing them to establish independent States".

Aboriginal Social Justice Commissioner Mick Dodson has declared the draft "the floor not the ceiling. We are still on the plains but hope to climb the foothills and then the mountains in terms of our rights."

Australian officials have foiled Skase's attempt to become a Spanish citizen after they withdrew his passport and Skase claimed he was a fugitive. Officials have said that they would always be delighted to supply Mr Skase with a one-way ticket home.

Talking about one-way tickets, it appears that's what alleged paedophile Philip Bell will be getting now that he has given up his fight against extradition from South Africa.

In Grahamstown yesterday the 62 year old Bell ended his legal battle volunteering to return on the advice of his lawyers.

Pauline Hanson's travel costs in promoting One Nation have been referred to the Department of Administrative Service chief David Jull. This made headline news on television last night

You might recall that Hanson was in the firing line last year with the same department over a television set she purchased. Big news in all the papers when the announcement was made - what you might have missed (I wonder why) was that this previous charge was dismissed.

Guarantee that the dismissal of this charge won't make print either... but if you keep on hitting at the old credibility angle some of the mud is sure to stick...

Interesting how the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission slant their findings in the interests of political correctness.

A Mr Bryant complained to the commission after The Sunday Mail (in Brisbane) used the word "POM" to describe the Englishman.

The Commission President Sir Ronald Wilson said that publication of the words "POM" or "POMMY" was not likely to "offend, insult humiliate or intimidate" people of English origin.

Now if the word used had been "abo" used to describe an Aboriginal somehow I think the Commission would have come up with a different finding.

So if you are English just remember that next time you are called a POM - it's OK because Sir Ronald Wilson (whoever he may be) has so decreed. Reverese racism at its best.

Brisbane's (Labor) Lord Mayor Jim Soorley yesterday prevented a motion raised by Liberal councillors to congratulate the Brisbane Strikers (soccer team) for reaching the grand final for the first time. In a cynical reply to the motion Soorley said he had stopped the motion because he felt that the proponent, Cr O'Connell, would "jinx the game".

This from the man who likened Pauline Hanson to Hitler.

Political:

Queensland State Premier Rob Borbidge yesterday softened his position on Howard's ten point plan over the High Court's native title decision on Wik.

"In all fairness, we have to say some progress has been made and the situation looks a bit better than it did," he said.

"We also have to accept the fact the Prime Minister has decided to go down a certain path - he's not going to budge - we have to accept the reality of Mr Howard's plan."

In Canberra a number of Australian's in the arts called on the federal politicians to endorse publicly the High Court's Wik decision.

They included actress Ruth Cracknell, poet Judith Wright and film director Jane Campion who joined the chairman of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, Gatjil Djerkurra, in a public show of support in Canberra yesterday.

The National Farmers Federation yesterday rejected deputy prime minister Tim Fischer's call for the pastoralists to fall in behind Howard's ten point plan.

Well done. It's just a shame that the truth will never be presented to the Australian public via the mainstream media. I have written to 60 Minutes and taken them up on the issue of foreign ownership of Australian companies. Geoff forgot that money talks and Mr Packer has proven once before that if the price is right, he will sell. Here is a transcript of my letter:

---
Geoff McMullins's comments on Mr Packer not ever wanting to sell Channel Nine were clearly wrong. Mr Packer sold Channel Nine once before to Mr Bond - because the price was too good to refuse.

Only days before this interview the cheif executive officer of our largest bank, National Australia Bank's Mr Don Argus warned that our banks were "sitting ducks" for foreign takeovers. If our largest banks are at risk surely no industry is safe, Geoff - not even Channel Nine!

What do you expect from a program that averages 9 mins a story, is totally visual and rates on par with the "X files"?

Pauline needs air time but as a person, not as a figurehead. She doesn't come over as either smart or sensitive; images a female leader must somehow convey to let people identify with them as leaders. You don't need 60 minutes for that, you need Pauline.

I watched the 60 Minutes report and read your comments with interest. Unfortunately, 60 Minutes is watched by many people and your web page by few. I realise that it helps to make explanations after the event, but this does not counter the damage done.

However, keep up the good work.

Subject: White Black

WHEN WHITE IS BLACK.

An easy solution to all Aboriginal problems in this country would simply be for all Australians to declare themselves to be black. This would not only instantly solve all problems rising out of the W.I.K and Mabo decisions but would also result in enormous welfare benefits to the entire community.

It sounds a ridiculous solution. But is it? The qualifications required for a white citizen to suddenly assume black status have nothing to do with colour of skin, indeed they so vague and nebulous anybody can get into the act. In fact this resolution to personal problems has already ocurred to a great many former white dropouts.

As Pauline Hanson states in her book `The Truth`: `In 1971 there were 115,953 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people identified by the Australian Bureau of Statistiics census. By 1991 the Australian indigenous population had blown out to 265,460. An increase of 129% in just 20 years.` A figure that would put rabbits to shame.

The benefits of becoming black are very real indeed. A white student, living away from home, whose parents earn more than $40,000 a year qualifies for $90 dollars per fortnight. A black gets $256.70. This same pattern of discrimination spreads right across the whole spectrum: Aboriginal legal aid is not means tested and is readily available. White legal aid is severely means tested and in many cases is non-existant.

Under the ATSIC HOME LOAN SCHEME, any Aboriginal with an income of 50% to 100% of the National Average Weekly Earnings can borrow 95% of the purchase price of a house on a deposit of $5000 or $3000 if family income is less than $25000. If whites tried that one on their bank manager they would be laughed out of the bank.

However all this is peanuts to the benefits aboriginals can receive from mining operations. A Sacred Site in the right area can can make you an instant millionare. And the easiest way to become a station owner is to get ATSIC to buy you one. Aboriginals already own 77 stations.

The obvious solution to all our troubles is either to become a member of Pauline Hanson`s ONE NATION or for all whites to declare themselves black before the whole of the G.D.P. is handed over to Aboriginal welfare.

Bill.

Ms Hanson actually quoted her source of figures from the Ausbuy guide . If it was from another source then why didn't she say so ???? You really must think people are ignorant fools.

As far as thinking you could go onto 60 minutes and not get hammered by controversial questions and stinging allegations just compounds the fact that not only is PH's One Nation nieve and gullible, but incredibly stupid. You didn't learn the first time.

Popular media will never support your views. It is a far better story to follow the controversy. I am actually laughing to myself while typing this because I can't believe how idiotic the campaign administrators were to let that uneducated twit of a leader appear on 60 mins again. Hey go for a third try, it is great entertainment. Thanks for a good laugh Pauline ( once again).

Subject: Pauline Hanson - Showing Hate

I am an immigrant to this country from Sri-Lanka. Living here for seven years, I have been raised to find Australia a great democratic country, free of racism. However, after 2nd March 1996, when the dark side of Australia became visible as Pauline Hanson won the election and was enrolled into the House of Representitives, my ideas were shattered. A racist Australia became visible and a country I once thought was fair to everyone, not depending whether they look different, speak different, or act different, was now changing. However, it is not the fault of the majority of her supporters. Although she is the official "Fish and Chips" lady, she is very clever in brainwashing uneducated and ununderstanding Australians into believing that 56.3% of Australia's population is going to be Asian, when only 7% (Australian Beauru of Stats) and Aboriginal's were cannibals, when she couldn't prove that. Since she's talking about Immigrant's and especially Aborigines, I'd just like to make the point clear that she is in the same boat, any immigrant is in - her ancestors have only lived on this land for 200 years. She can't say anything about the Aboriginal land claims because Aborigine's have been living here for well over 20,000 years. But, let bygones be bygones. It does'nt mean however that Australian's should feel guilty about what their ancestors have done to the Aborigines. They mighty well should feel guilty and like our good old Paul Keating said, lets reconcile with the Indiginious people of this land by the year 2001. When Autralia proclaims 100 years of Federation, make the change. However, Pauline Hanson is like a dog latched onto a runners foot. Australia is having to drag this racist biggot behind and it is hurting the image of Australia and the very roots of Australian MULTICULTURAL society. She is the one who will cause a civil war if she keeps going like this and she is the one who is stopping Australia from improving. AUSTRALIA IS NOT GOING TO BE SWAMPED BY ASIANS, AND BY ALL MEAN'S TRY TO MAKE UP FOR WHAT THE ANCESTORS DID TO THE ABORIGINES.
