International:

Seems like the reports about Indy's sponsors, Sunbelt Developments, in the lead up to this year's Indy Car race on the Gold Coast were true.

Sunbelt has placed itself into voluntary liquidation - defaulting on part of a contract to the tune of Au$600,000 in sponsorship money still outstanding to the organisers of this year's race - IMG.

Joint Sunbelt administrator, Susan Carter said, "At this stage, the Indy sponsorship is really an unsecured creditor with no greater rights than any other unsecured creditors."

ABC's popular Radio Australia is about to face the axe. If the Australian Broadcasting Corporation don't get an extra Au$25 million in May this year Radio Australia will be closed network chairman Donald McDonald said yesterday.

Last night the ABC's popular current affair program The 7.30 Report was cancelled because of industrial action relating to the effect budget cuts will have on news and current affairs sections.

It was only two weeks ago that the ABC's Four Corners report carried a story exposing the world of Australia's richest man - Kerry Packer. It would be a tragedy if this independent whistle blower became the victim of budget cutting measures.

The report recommending the budget cutting measures on the ABC was compiled by US import - Mansfield. It suggests that the ABC could be run on a budget of Au$500 million per annum. Funny how all the government hatchet men are American imports...

The Labor party are planning their strategy to win back Pauline Hanson's seat of Oxley in the next Federal Election. The gambit is being spearheaded by ex-premier of the state Wayne Goss. Goss said, "If I do nominate for Federal Parliament I will not stand in Oxley."

Speaking on ABC Radion Goss said, "I've got to make that decision (to nominate) this year. Some people are urging me to go to Canberra, and that's certainly attractive because more and more of the big political decisions are made in Canberra."

"I don't think just any high-profile candidate would work (in the seat of Oxley). It would have to be someone the people of Oxley felt they had something in common with. Just as good a prospect would be a good local candidate with two qualities - good community links and a good understanding of the average working class people."

Speaking to an audience of over 400 at Goondiwindi on Wednesday night the Independent Member for Oxley Pauline Hanson warned that pushing school leavers into further education would ensure that Australians became a nation of "academic derelicts" with no jobs to go to.

Ms Hanson also said:

Despite threats there were no protestors at the function - unlike the launch of One Nation last Friday.

Political:

The seriousness of the native title debate on Australia was highlighted when Queensland State Premier Rob Borbidge was advised by prominent Japanese businessmen that their investment in the country was now being reviewed because of Wik.

He used the exampole of Queensland's Chevron gas pipeline as an example of how native title was effecting investment and confidence in Australia.

"This (pipeline) project could generate great opportunities for value adding industries in Queensland - and that is precisely why we are so keen to see it become a reality as soon as possible," Borbidge said.

"If there is a proper resolution of that matter (native title), this pipeline really does offer phenomenal investment opportunities."

Mr Borbidge said that he found while visiting Japan recently potential investors were releuctant to become embroiled through their investment here in costly native title issues.

Yesterday the National farmers Federation dismissed the 15 page proposal from Aboriginal groups aimed at resolving the native title issue.

Responses received in response to Lord Mayor Jim Soorley's remarks on Pauline Hanson.

April 16

Brisbane Lord Mayor Jim Soorley condemned Pauline Hanson as being racist and evil and equated her with Hitler. I fully expect him to follow up with a demand that she be burnt at the stake.

In the days of Hitler and Stalin, if you were caught searching for the truth or opposing them, you were either shot or sent to a gulag in Siberia.

For Cr Soorley to state that Hanson has to be stopped is akin to denying her democratic right of free speech which we enjoy in this country, unlike Hitler's Germany.

April 17

There was Prime Minister John Howard on the radio, in full hypocritical mode, criticising Cr Soorley because of the Lord Mayor's perfectly legitimate verbal attack on Pauline Hanson.

Due to Howard's poor performance as Prime Minister in the past year, the nation is destined to be divided for years to come.

When use of the authority of his office was needed to pour scorn and ridicule on the rubbish coming from the mouth of Hanson, Howard remained silent.

She would not have received the prominence she now enjoys had the correct stance been adopted 12 months ago. We expect our Prime Minister to show some intestinal fortitude rather than being apprehensive about possibly offending bigots and racists.

April 15

Finally someone with the power to be heard has come out with the truth about Pauline Hanson. It is a fine line that separates those who would do evil from those who would stand by and allow it.

History should be evidence enough of what can happen when a politician mobilises an unthinking mass looking for an easy answer or scapegoat for their problems. It's called ethnic cleansing.

Granted, Hanson lacks Hitler's Intelligence or Milosevic's charisma, but she is dangerous. Cr Soorley is right - the woman should be stoped.

Joe Churchman Kelvin Grove.

Subject: Soorley's Blackshirts

Dear Sir,

Howard should have taken a firm stance against "division", says Keith Gibson of Chermside. He should have crushed Hanson from the start, forced her to conform. How, Keith? Legislate her into silence, lock her in the dungeons, cut out her tongue, burn her at the stake, all because she disagrees with you and your conformist lot?

Joe Churchman of Kelvin Grove regards dissent as "doing evil", criticising his favourite minorities is "scapegoating", people with opposing opinions have to be silenced before their views lead to "ethnic cleansing". How, Joe? Public spitting, Death threats, Chemotherapy, Lobotomy, Gas chambers?

The spirit of Hitler is alive and well, but not in the Hanson camp.It is coming from the Soorleyites, who know everything about fascism except to how to recognise it when it comes out of their own mouths.

Business:

ANI has extracted itself from the loss making business which has been at the centre of allegations involving Kerry Packer. The European based Holter waste-water treatment business has been sold for Au$104.5 million. Holter has been bought by Berlin Wasser.

Sport:

The Australian cricket selectors have done a "cold turkey" on Ian Healy. Yesterday we remarked on how he had saved the Australians from defeat in the one day series against South Africa after Taylor's abysmal performances in the first two games in the series. As captain, Healy steered Australia to an unbeatable position after 6 matches only to be replaced in the seventh game by Steve Waugh - a match which Australia lost.

Healy has been rewarded by having his long standing position as vice-captain stripped off him - with Steve Waugh gaining the position... yeah, and you guessed it, the Australian cricketer with the worst track record this season, Mark Taylor, returns as captain in the Ashes series later this month.

The Australian Ashes team is: Mark Taylor (captain); Steve Waugh (vice-captain); Michael Bevan; Andrew Bichel; Greg Blewett; Matthew Elliott; Adam Gilchrist; Jason Gillespie; Ian Healy; Brendon Julian; Michael Kasprowicz; Justin Langer; Glenn McGrath; Ricky Ponting; Michael Slater; Shane Warne; Mark Waugh.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another perfect day in paradise...

Have a great day.
