International:

The local Brisbane paper carried a powerful image of a 104 year young Gallipoli veteran, Harold Angel, resplendant in suit and medals with hand raised in recognition to the cheers as he was driven in a jeep at the head of the ANZAC day parade in Brisbane. He is the sole representative of the ill-fated Gallpoli campaign.

Political:

The outgoing Labor members of parliament seem to be big winners with massive tax payer pensions for their "hard work" looking after the government of the people. Pensions for lesser lights will range from Au$75,000 to Au$40,000 per annum with the likes of Paul Keating having a virtual open cheque book. For example Keating gets all his travel paid for - not bad when you are going to make a living consulting for business to Asian contacts...

Business:

With a commercial war looming between Telstra and Optus it appears that local phone calls in Australia will be cut. For too long Telstra has soaked the business population in Australia with exhorbitant charges and massive profits. It is almost like paying a GST as the public own Telstra in the first place!

The move to reduce local calls will probably take place before Christmas, at present Australians pay 25 cents per local call. These calls are not time-based (ie I can be on the Internet for 5 hours and only pay 25 cents).

Sport:

The media have been having a go at young Malcolm Allen who tipped Kieren Perkins into third place in the 400 metre finals and out of the Olympis in Atlanta in that event. Pressure is being put on the young lad to surrender his position so that Perkins can swim.

How low can you go... in the chase for readership?

Malcolm has worked hard in the pool all his life to get what he achieved this week in the pool.

Perhaps head swim coach Don Talbot sums it up the best: "This is not the place to score world records, the media would have you believe that. Well you have it here from the horses mouth not from the other end that the media dish up."

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Ah what a life! We had soft rain all of yesterday - a cool, pleasant and relaxing day in the global office. The 1995 RAAF Air Show at Amberley web site is nearing completion now.
