International:

Today is a big day on the Internet for young people, a 5 year old, Alex Balson, is launching his business, Alex's Scribbles. The launch will include the Mayor of the City of Ipswich, several high ranking officials and the director of the Australian Koala Foundation.

"The launch demonstrates that the Internet is for everybody. It is the great equaliser, the greatest opportunity creator ever conceived by man. It should have the likes of Murdoch and Gates quaking in their shoes," said father, Scott Balson.

Political:

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer was yesterday put on the spot having to defend comments made by Prime Minister John Howard who suggested that some bilateral links between Australia and its neighbours were under way.

Midway through his tour through South East Asia, Mr Downer's first trip as Foreign Minister, he said that Mr Howard's comments were on-line with his own statements on Australia's relationship with Asia.

What I find interesting is that Downer is playing such a major and effective role while Howard concentrates on the things that matter back at home. We always used to hear of Keating's "big picture" stuff. Personally I think that the former Prime Minister just enjoyed feeding his own ego by going on those Asian trips. The work could have easily been done by an underling... but then there would have been no photo opportunity for the master blaster of days gone by!

Business:

MIM Holdings Limited is expected to announce the Au$238 million sale of its 65% stake in the Highlands Gold project today through an entitlement issue to its shareholders. The shares will be sold at 65 cents each and MIM shareholders will be entitled to buy two Highlands Gold shares for each block of nine MIM shares held.

The share issue is expected to be fully underwritten.

Sport:

The Australian Rugby League (ARL) has ordered Penrith's former Springbok Rugby centre, Pieter Muller, to honour his contract with the South Queensland Crushers. Crushers chief executive officer, Alan Graham, said that he had been told by the ARL yesterday that Muller either played for the Crushers this year or would not be allowed to play at all.

At the end of last year Muller switched from rugby union to rugby league but had wanted to play for Penrith.

Personal trivia:

Today we launch Alex's Scribbles at the Global Information Centre, Ipswich city's new library. The launch takes place at 10am and we expect a fair sprinkling of the media including television to be there to cover the event.
