International:

Prime Minister John Howard has pledged that the budget pain that the country faces, following the Coalition's pledge to cut Au$8 billion from the deficit during the next two years, will reap a tremendous dividend in the near future. Howard has predicted that there will be a tremendous growth in jobs and that housing interest rates will fall to lower levels.

Mr Howard said that Australia had a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to address the weaknesses of the economy to provide for a long period of "uninterrupted growth".

In the face of suggestions that Howard is breaking election promises to reach the deficit reduction target, Howard reiterated that, "Keeping faith with the public is the most important thing to me - it's more important than a numerical outcome." He went on to say, "I've placed a huge premium on keeping commitments. I don't accept that our fiscal goal and our electoral trust are fundamentally irreconcilable."

Personally I would trust "honest John" Howard over Paul Keating any day.

Political:

The decision by the Federal Government to deny the states with any additional public housing funding is expected to be challenged at a special meeting of government leaders next week. The federal decision to freeze the funds is set out in confidential papers circulated to the states earlier this month.

The meeting, known as COAG (Council of Australian Governments), will be attended by Howard in Canberra next Thursday.

Business:

Australis Media Ltd, the Pay TV minow which has been hounded by the likes of Murdoch and Packer and survived is now in fear of its very existence because of the Australian stock Exchange (ASX).

A Au$200 million rescue package remains in doubt after the ASX last night pressured Australis to reveal more details about the deal so that the shareholders could be kept fully informed.

The ASX has stopped short of recommending Australis postpone the meeting scheduled for Tuesday however it has made it clear that it is seeking greater disclosure about the deal. This was despite Australis yesterday releasing financial details with its accounts for the nine months to March 31st showing a loss of Au$164 million .

In April a consortium of investors led by Kerry Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Pty Ltd pledged loan guarantees to give Australis a six month life-line.

Sport:

Qantas has grabbed a five year contract to sponsor Australian Formula One Grand Prix forcing the developers of Melbourne's contentious City Link project, Transurban, to surrender the title after just one year.

Jeff Kennett, the Victorian Premier, announced yesterday that the international sporting event would now be known as the Qantas Australian Grand Prix to at least 2001.

Kennett also confirmed that the race next year at Albert Park would be held on the weekend of March 6th to 9th securing the first race in the 1997 season.

A Qantas group executive general manager, Mr Geoff Dixon, said that the sponsorship deal would enhance the airlines "global brand" and would feature prominently in the company's marketing and promotional activities.

Social:

It appears that the allure of the Gold Coast to Japanese visitors is waning. A new survey reveals that young Japanese honeymooners would now rather go to Italy, and white collar workers rather go to Hong Kong than Sydney for their overseas shopping.

The only Australian destination that has risen in popularity is Ayers Rock which comes equal 29th with Mongolia! New York, Hong Kong, and Tahiti were the top three destinations followed by Paris and Cairo. The Gold Coast came in after Mongolia (can you believe that!) at 31st followed by Sydney in 37th spot and Perth 41st.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another absolutely superb day today with blue skies and warm weather. Yes, I am going to enjoy my time in the global office working on a new project involving on-line products.
