International:

In a blatantly emotional remark the Member of Parliament for Kennedy in north Queensland, Mr Bob Katter, compared the response by certain gun owners to the new gun ban to that of David Koresh the leader of the Branch Davidian sect in Texas where the terrible Waco disaster in 1983 led to the deaths of eighty of his followers.

Mr Katter said the "good lord" would, he hoped, help the people attempting to enforce the laws by taking automatic and semi-automatic weapons from extreme right-wing owners.

Political:

The Federal Government has signalled that it will resist further reductions in Australia's greenhouse pollution levels. warning that thousands of jobs were already at risk because of the existing agreement. The Government announced yesterday that it would push for developing countries to take on their share of the economic burden of cutting air pollution rather than leave it to industrialised countries.

Mr Alexander Downer, the Foreign Minister, said that the Government was not prepared to "offer up thousands of jobs" in the name of safeguarding climate change when fast growing developing countries were not carrying an equal burden in working to reduce gases.

Sorry, Alexander, but aren't there an enormous amount of empoyment opportunities in the area related to developing technology to halt pollution?

Business:

Metway Bank shareholders will wait until at least next month to vote on competing proposals for the future of their company.

Metway chairman, Frank Haly, told shareholders that he still supported the Government's planned merger ahead of the St George bid which offered Au$4.77 a share compared to the government's Au$4.65.

Somehow I think that the hip pocket will win this one Frank!

Sport:

Olympic team member Daniel Kowalski said that his defeat of arch-rival Kieren Perkins in last night's 400m freestyle swimming final at the third grand prix meet in Homebush showed that he was right on track for Atlanta.

Perkins went into the final with the fastest qualifying time but it was Kowalski who won by 0.18 sec.

The final times were: DK- 3min 46.84sec and KP- 3min 47.02 sec.

Social:

Brisbane's polluted air (the big smoke) contributes to up to 83 deaths in Brisbane each year, research shows.

Griffith University researcher Rod Simpson found poor air quality led to the premature deaths through health problems associated with respiratory diseases.

Poor air quality is blamed for the deaths of about 1,000 people a year in Australia.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another long day in the big smoke today. Yes, the city of Brisbane calls once again. Outside the global office this morning it is misty with thickcloud and the opposite bank of the Brisbane river completely hidden. Looks like it will clear and no chance of rain.
