International:

The incessant rain and flooding in the 1996 floods is like wet gold for the famers to our west who have been suffering from the most terrible drought. Lex Buchanan of the Queensland Farmers Federation said that the rain had "poured billions of dollars into the State."

The state is looking forward to record wheat and sugar cane crops as a result of the drought breaker which is also expected to literally "wash away" the mouse plague that has devastated the Downs area.

Along the Gold Coast the beaches have been severely eroded by strong seas. Roads all over South East Queensland are now under water and people are staying home rather than venturing out into the rain.. which falls and falls and falls...

The Brisbane river has broken its banks in the Brisbane area and has continued to rise further up stream.

Political:

Following the massacre last week at Port Arthur the bureaucrats around Australia are working themselves into a frenzy about the state of gun laws in this country. There is talk that the Federal government will attempt to create uniform laws which will outlaw semi-automatic rifles and see tighter controls over hand guns.

The two states which seem to be bowing to the powerful gun lobby are Queensland and Western Australia. States like New South Wales and Tasmania immediately supported the proposal by John Howard's government. Guess those phones will be ringing again next week!

Sport:

Super 12 rugby union has really gained a lot of attention and following here in Australia. Unlike the doomed Super League, this little venture by Murdoch seems to be a winner with fantastic games and top players from all over the world competing for the trophy.

Auckland currently head up the table followed by Northern Transvaal and Queensland.

Global Gripe of the day:

The grand spoiler:
The grand spoiler seems to be up to her old tricks again. Princess Di, according to press reports, cannot agree to the settlement proposal she and Charles had looked at and has decided to make Charles wait out the legal 5 years before their marriage is finally annulled.

Now there is one really mixed up lady - why doesn't she just let go and get on with her life. It seems to me that she actually relishes controversy especially if it's covered in the media and damaging to the Royal family. I know what Henry VIII would have said... a long time ago!!!

Personal trivia, from the global office:

We stayed at home yesterday and just watched the rain continue to fall. Spent constructive time building a web site about the floods.
