International:

The number of Australian millionaires has more than doubled in the last five years with the new breed of millionaire likely to be the man next door.

The portrait of Australia's 90s millionaire (as painted by Thomas Stanley - author of the book The Millionaire Next Door) is as follows:

The Australian Taxation Office figures reveal a sharp climb in the number of high incomes declared each financial year since 1989-90.

In 1989/90 238 Australians declared an income of more than Au$1 million.

Subject: Re: Tom Bray's Letter to the QT

Dear Sir,

I have had another thought on our friend Mr Yanner. Really, he should have served some time for the crime he committed. Perhaps the following is some more food for thought.

" Atsic employees are subject to the Public Service Act. Elected representatives face the same restrictions as those in union ballots: They cannot have been imprisoned for four months or three months for dishonesty. Labor sought to amend this to put it on the same footing as politicians: a conviction of 12 months or more. The deputy chairman of ATSIC, ``Sugar'' Ray Robinson, would be ineligible to stand for Federal Parliament on this basis because of a 1963 conviction for rape, along with several less serious offences." Cheers

Sport:

What a great Super 12 match played out live at 3.15am Queensland time this morning... Northern Transvaal beating Queensland 14 points to 3 with a couple of stunning tries by Theuns Van Rensburg, the South African scrum half being the difference.

Queenslander Els had a very indifferent game missing a number of easy penalty kicks.

Social:

Last year 37 pedestrians were killed on Queensland roads. This year 7 have already died. 1995 was a horror year for pedestrians with 92 being killed - but during that year only 45 were issued with on-the-spot fines for breaching Regulation 40 of the Queensland Traffic Act (offence to jaywalk).

How pedestrians were killed:
Crossing carriageway at traffic lights6
Crossing carriageway at pedestrian crossing1
Crossing carriageway with no pedestrian crossing30
Stationary on raod side6
Walking against the traffic2
Walking with the traffic7
Playing on roads1

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another beautiful Queensland day ahead. Cooler overnight.

Have a great day!
