International:

Convicted Gold Coast conman Peter Foster was given a day in the sun yesterday to attend the funeral of his uncle Danny Nevin. Foster tried to sneak into Australia earlier this year with a forged passport.

Foster sat beside his mother Louise Poletti handcuffed and crying as he was watched by two prison guards and a corrective services dog squad officer and dog.

After the funeral Ms Poletti said, "It's affected me something dreadfully, seeing my son come to a funeral handcuffed with two armed guards and a dog... he's not a violent or dangerous man."

A long drop since his high rolling days with Samantha Fox......

Tropical cyclone Rachel hammered Darwin yesterday bringing rain and strong winds to the town before it moved towards the Kimberley coast. Fearing a repeat of the 1974 Christmas terror brought by cyclone Tracy residents battened down before the cyclone hit. The cyclone brought flooding, cut off roads, and brought down powerlines.

There was panic buying by residents despite most of the town's businesses operating on skeleton staff... Rachel brought 311 millimetres of rain in a 24 hour period - a record for the city.

Political:

Acting Prime Minister Tim Fisher has put the cat amongst the pigeons with his comments about an Australian Republic. Fischer said that he would like to see the chief justice of the High Court taking the role "as president".... a minimalist position.

The Australian Republic Movement are not impressed as they had plans for far greater things like a President and a heirarchal Republican struture.

State Premier of Victoria, Jeff Kennett, yesterday launched a major attack against the stance suggested by Tim Fisher warning that it would represent a "dangerous infringement" on the political independence of the courts and predicted that the suggestion would have a "minimal lifespan".

"The question of whether or not Australia should become a Republic is one issue but the independence of our judicial system should not be open for negotiation," Kennett said.

The anxst is really raised by the widely differing views of members from within the National Party - of which Fischer is leader - his leadership has been under threat on many occasions, even though this has been denied in the past and an issue as controversial as this could just see another sitting National member of Parliament make a run for that leadership.

Business:

A Taiwanese steel company, Ang Feng, will merge with a small Western Australian company to challenge the financial might of the Big Australian - BHP in the Australian steel industry.

The Mid West project worth Au$1.4 billion is set to be established at the West Australian fishing village of Geraldton, north of Perth.

Perth based Kingstream Resources NL will make Ang Feng the first foreign steel making company in Australia. The Mid West project is expected to begin production by the year 2000.

Sport:

The West Indian cricket team flattened the Pakistani's at Brisbane's GABBA stadium yesterday. The day night match saw the Windies bowl out Pakistan for just 197 before scoring 198 for the loss of just 4 wickets in 48 overs.

Hooper and Lara were the stars for the Windies with Lara just missing out on his half century while Hooper reached 54 not out.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Well the family left for Perth last night and should by now sleeping off the effects of the 5 hour direct overnight flight to the West Australian capital.

Here at the global office the weather is once again perfect with a cool day ahead of us... which is more than can be said about Perth which has been suffering a heat wave for the last week with temperatures reaching 43 degrees celcius... yes that's right, what a difference to the big freeze going on for our many readers in the northern hemisphere where temperatures are reaching minus 35 degrees at the moment!
