International:

Well an Aussie Actor, Mel Gibson, swooped the pools at the Oscars last night taking out the Best Picture and Best Director awards for the movie Braveheart which won 5 Oscars in all! Babe the other movie with a strong Australian influence managed to win one Oscar for Best Visual Effects. With Babe it would appear that the robot sheep outdid the cute and cuddly pig!

Political:

Unions have threatened a campaign of political and industrial action to stop the Howard government's moves to change the awards. The ACTU (our old favourite busybodies!), or Australian Council of Trade Unions, said yesterday that it would launch an awareness campaign to head off the government's moves to ditch paid rate awards. It said that if the government didn't back off then it faced more radical action including strikes and rallies.

This is what the secretary, motor mouth Bill Kelty, threatened before the Federal Election last month.

Business:

I agree with the Courier Mail which finds it totally ludicrous that the tax payer in Queensland has subsidised the Indy Carnival race at the Gold Coast to the tune of Au$70 million since its inception in 1991. Gold Coast businesses benefit but how does that help the tax payer in Ipswich, Toowoomba or Mackay?

The newspaper suggests that if the profits generated exceed the costs then private firms should fund its continued existence and not the general tax paying citizens of Queensland who have more important local issues for the dollars to be spent on.

Sport:

The club most aligned with Super League, the Brisbane Broncos, had a fiery meeting before it was decided that the players would return to play in the Australian Rugby League (ARL). All rebel teams have now agreed to return to the ARL fold but there is an aweful lot of resentment amongst the rebel players about the way in which the Federal Court took their career decision out of their hands.

Social:

A private buyer paid Au$34,500 for a single page penned by A B Banjo Patterson in 1939 claiming that he had written that Australian classic "Waltzing Matilda". This is the only known document confirming Banjo Patterson's ownership of the song. Christie's, who auctioned the letter, estimated that it would raise between Au$30,000 and Au$50,000.

Personal trivia:

Well another day visiting the big smoke today. Once again beautiful weather and sunny skies...
