International:

Rupert Murdoch's News Limited has reportedly bought a US satellite venture in partnership with US communications company MCI Communications after putting nearly Au$ 1 billion on the table. The system is capable of covering the whole of the US with 170 television channels...

Political:

Well its only a week to go before the by election in Mundingburra and according to a poll by the local newspaper in Brisbane, The Courier Mail, Labor has hit the front by the narrowest of margins for the first time. Ousted Labor candidate Ken Davies led the independent vote with only 3% while Labor and Liberal votes stood on 33% each. My money is on the Liberals taking the seat after the total fracas in the Labor campaign leading up to this by election.

Sport:

Well Boris Becker will meet MIchael Chang in the mens finals of the Australian Tennis Open. Chang defeated Andre Agassi in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 while Boris stormed past Australian hope Mark Woodford 6-4, 6-2, 6-0. The final is being played tomorrow.
In cricket the Australian team reached a massive 500 plus in their match against Sri Lanka. The star of the Australian team was that cricketing whizz Steve Waugh with a total of 170 runs.

Social:

Journalists are less conservative than most of the public and it shows in their reportiing according to the latest survey by Queensland Unviversity's professor of journalism, John Henningham. For example the research found that 78% of journalists interviewed were in favour of an Australian Republic while only 49% of Australians were. This slant was reflected not only in their reporting on this issue but in many others as well the report suggested.

Personal trivia:

It was a stinker yesterday with temperature reaching over 35 degrees celcius. The global office became the global sauna. For those in the northern hemisphere here's an update - looks like another stinker with blue skies and at 5.45am the temperature must already be in the late 20s!!
