International:

While in Singapore and Malaysia Prime Minister Paul Keating advised his counreparts to engage co-operatively with China. This must have come as a big surprise as it was not long ago that Australians were being warned about the "yellow peril" in the North. What makes it even more astonishing is the recent jailing in China, for 8 years, of an Australian (Chinese born) businessman for allegedly trumped up fraud charges.

Political:

Well it doesn't take our beloved Prime Minister to get into the fray that he loves so much. Insults were flying yesterday with the coalition leader John Howard being called weak and sneaky and lacking any political honesty.
Former Labor numbers man Graham Richardson has gone on record saying that Federal Labor will be in trouble if the state party lose the seat of Mundingburra in the by-election on February 3rd. This is the most likely scenario concedes Richardson.

Business:

Investors wiped nearly Au$70 million off the value of Simsmetal shares yesterday when their interim report revealed and 18% drop in profits and a warning that the second half of the year was expected to be no better. The shares lost 86 cents to trade at Au$7.14 at the close on Friday.

Sport:

Australian cricket star spinner Shayne Warne fears for his safety in next month's World Cup play in Pakistan and has delayed a decision as to whether he will go. Craig McDermott has received threatening letters from the Middle East and the Australian team, while in Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan will be given security normally reserved for a visiting head of state. What a sad state the world of cricket is in.

Social:

Well we all knew it, but now it appears to be recorded as fact. The fat cats in the Public Service are very good at looking after themselves and have done even better while Labor has been in power. The problems appear to be in the lower ranks of the service as fewer and fewer staff fit into this area. I can just see the office receptionist being called Chief Communications Officer in the future - wonder what salary that would draw?

Personal trivia:

We had an interesting email all the way from the Ukraine yesterday. It appears that a business there wants to buy several thousand computers. Not being in the business we posted the message on the local news group at Global Info-Links. Other than that another warm day with sunny skies and no breeze - looks another one of the same today.
