International:

Prime Minister Paul Keating is now in Malaysia on an official visit to meet his counterpart Dr Mahatir. Relations between Australia and Malaysia soured when the Australian PM who is known for his insults called the Malaysian PM a "recalcitrant".

Political:

Its all a go in the seat of Mundingburra. With the cat fight taking place between dumped Labor Minister Ken Davies and the state ALP if I was Liberal opponent Frank Tanti I would just sit at home and wait for the day of the by election. The self destruct mode continues to escalate with Davies claiming that the Labor party offered him an extended holiday in the Pacific Isles and New Zealand after dumping him - as a "bribe" and to keep him out of the way. Wow! the ammunition being fed the Liberal party is mind-boggling... as the date for the by-election in early February approaches.

Business:

Sotheby's Australia revealed yesterday that its sales had risen by 125% in 1995 to a record Au$55.7 million. Investors returned to the collectables market with 17 paintings being sold for over Au$100,000. The major growth was in the international realty section with sales rising from just Au$8 million to Au$35.7 million. The average price for 20 properties sold was Au$1.8 million.

Sport:

The Australian Tennis Open is now on .. and as always drama followed the international stars with Andre Agassi falling down the hotel staircase and then nearly losing his first round match to little-known Argentinian Gaston Etlis..

Social:

Tough new Austudy rules are to be brought in to stop exploitation by the rich. (Austudy is a government grant aimed at helping the poor through University.) The most celebrated case of exploitation was by Alan Bond's daughter who drove to University in a Porsche but claimed Austudy because she was poor. The Government expects to save about Au$29 million by clamping on this loophole. More than 300,000 students currently claim Austudy in Australia.

Global Gripe of the day:

Corruption in the Police force
It happens all over the world but one never expected it to happen in the capitals of Australia. But it has. Police corruption from the highest levels of the force in certain districts and cities right through to the new recruits who are trained into the game. It is so bad in New South Wales that even the police commissioner has resigned after a Royal Commission exposed corruption so rife that the Police force was like a piece of rotten wood riddled with white ants. Now there is talk about the game being played extensively in Victoria. Hey guys, but I thought this was Australia? I have heard of police handing out marijuhana that they have confiscated from people they have arrested to their mates here in Queensland - but that is pretty low key compared to what is happening elsewhere in this country!

Personal trivia:

The team have been working hard on the Restaurants of South East Queensland web site. This web will be launched in early March and will cover over 100 of the very best. The day today looks like being another yesterday with warm temperatures and sunny skies. The river is starting to drop now after the heavy rains of a week or so ago, but it is still a muddy brown colour.
