International:

International Australian cricket star, Steve Waugh was filled with awe when he met the 85 year old nun Mother Teresa yesterday in Calcutta. Mother Teresa gave Steve Waugh her business card which read: "The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service." I don't know about you, but just reading about someone as special as Mother Teresa makes me feel quite reassured about humanity. We have listed her as a Global Hero this month.

Political - Federal Election 2nd March 1996:

Well it seems like John Howard's troops are making all the wrong moves with more and more being branded racist. Like the Mundingurra election in reverse the Federal Liberals are going to find this a hard one to shake so close to the election. In the latest move the Liberal candidate for Oxley (geographically bordering the global office as it stretches up to the other side of the Brisbane river opposite us) has resigned. Pauline Hanson was forced to resign after making comments about the Aboriginal community. Ms Hanson apologised unreservedly to anyone in her community who might have been offended by her comments but the damage to the iron-cast campaign strategy of the Liberals in starting to create a fair amount of rust right now. The other Coalition member who is creating mayhem is Bob Katter Jnr (from the far North of Queensland) he supported Bob Burgess (another National Party member's) comment about "de-wogging" immigrants when they went through the citizenship ceremony.

Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating has been able to pick himself up off the ropes and is now right into the fray again bringing up his old favourite, this will get them going issue, the Australian Republic.

Business:

US oil giant, Mobil, has fired off a Au$1.6 billion bid for Australian oil producer Ampolex Ltd. The offer was announced yesterday by Mobil's unlisted Australian subsidiary, Mobil Expolration and Producing Australia Pty Ltd. Mobil's offer values Ampolex at Au$4.25 a share.

Sport:

Samantha Riley might be in trouble with FINA, but the politicians are warming right up to this Australian golden girl. Prime Minister Paul Keating and Sports Minister John Faulkner both confirmed yesterday that Sam Riley would receive the Prime Ministerial Women and Sports award being presented by Keating on February 26th. All these reassurances surfaced after rumours raced through sporting circles that Riley had been stripped of the award because of the doping allegations.

Social:

Breast cancer rates can be cut amongst Australian women according to researchers. The breakthrough discovery, in the first clinical trial of its type, shows mixed hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) have the potential to cut the number of women dying from breast cancer by half. The results are the first hard evidence that HRT could increase a woman's risk of developing the disease which strikes one in every 13 Australian women at some time in their lives.

Personal trivia:

A very pleasant day all round yesterday. The weather was cooler, the ability to enjoy the riverviews from the global office without the disturbance of travel to the big smoke (Brisbane) and the pleasant meal at Rogues restaurant in Ipswich made for another perfect day in paradise.
