International:

The Prime Minister is set to visit Malaysia next week - a move which is been as positive as ties between the two countries have been traditionally rather poor. Ever since Paul Keating referred to the Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a "recalcitrant" the mood has not been good. With most of the slanging coming from the Malaysians. Keating is infamous for his put-downs.. however, he also oversteps the mark on a fairly regular basis.

Political:

Seems like the by-election in the Queensland state seat of Mundingburra is becoming a Federal issue with Prime Minister Paul Keating expressing concern as to the impact of a Labor loss to the coalition and the ramifications for this year's Federal election in this state. A senior Labor politician Jim Elder has now expressed his support for Health Minister Peter Beattie to replace Premier Wayne Goss. You can't have friends in politics!

Business:

Falls in share prices on Wall Street stripped nearly half the gains made in the Australian Stock Market over several weeks in just one day. The All Ordinaries had reached 2276 by January 9th. Yesterday it fell to below 2240.

Sport:

The Australian A Cricket team (the reserve side) played an excellent day-night match against the West Indies winning with 243 over the Windies 243. The star performer was, without doubt, Greg Blewett who knocked the ball all over the boundary and scored 85 before being run out.

Social:

Well the truth has come about those Qantas flight attendant meal allowances. I am obviously in the wrong occupation! Seems like they get paid over Au$130 per day in exotic locations like Hong Kong and Singapore and up to Au$190 per day in Tokyo. Bring out the shrimps and the champagne fellows... remember the strike earlier this week was caused by the airline wanting to review these payments and bring them into line with inflation - this might have caused a marginal lowering of the allowances in some cities.

Global Gripe of the day:

Give dads a break.
The Brisbane Family Court jailed a man for 6 months for writing letters to his daughter and for attending her school sports carnival. The Family Court had previously ruled that the father could only write his daughter 3 letters a year! Seemed he had written 50 - or about one a week. the content of the letters was typical Dad to daughter type stuff with nothing obscene or bad being expressed in them. In this age when step-dads can so easily fall into "the trap" of sexual abuse claims by step-daughters when they have done nothing wrong the age of social equality appears to have become very skewed.

Personal trivia:

Well the sun came out again yesterday, and yes I did get to that grassy bank - fighting the flourishing grass that once stood six foot high. When coming up the path back to the house with weed eater in hand I felt like the knight of old coming back to his castle after having fought off the enemy! I was hot, sticky and itchy... the shower sure felt good though! A funny sort of day today, whispy clouds broken in patches displaying the blue beyond.
