International:

Classified government documents locked away since the 1960s show that Australia sent their top physicist on a secret mission to France in the 1960s because of fears of hazardous fall out during atomic testing by the French in the Pacific. External Affairs Minister of the day, Sir Garfield Barwick sent Prof. Ernest Titterton to hold discussions with French scientists about their tests at Mururoa atoll. His report stated that any hazards would be insignificant - what else would you expect - the French were OK on the other side of the world. Looks like shades of the last great colonial power to me.

Political:

Well yesterday Ken Davies, the displaced Labor MP in the seat of Mundingburra, took the wind right out of Queensland Premier Wayne Goss' sails. In the middle of a radio talk-back interview with Goss in Townsville, one of Davies' team phoned to say that Davies would be making a statement at 10am at the local school. The media dumped the poor old Premier (who lost out on "photo-opportunities") leaving to hear what Davies would say. The long and the short of it is that Davies is standing as an independent and that if he wins he will seek an alliance with the other independent, Liz Cunningham. Between them they will hold the balance of power which must force another state election. My prediction of the 6th January is starting to look good!

Business:

Tax hikes have knocked Au$98 million off the bottom line of mining giant Alcoa. Higher metal prices pushed Alcoa's overall profit up by 17% from the previous year to Au$312.7 million. With gold prices currently going through a mini-boom it looks like the mining sector in Australia is set for a good 1996.

Sport:

Happy and sad sums up two members of the Australian cricket team which lost against Sri Lanka in a day-night match yesterday. Batsman Michael Slater was dumped after going out for only 2 runs. His poor form is reflected in a dismal total of only 51 runs after 6 knocks as opener for the Australian team. He is replaced by Steve Waugh who has just recovered from injury. The happy fellow is Michael Bevan who once again remained not out with a score of 65. This remarkable batsman has only been out once in 7 matches and that was a run out! Australia scored 213 and Sri Lanka replied with 214 to take the match.

Social:

Parents should sleep in the same room as their babies to reduce the risk of cot death is a recommendation by a new research document. A study of 2000 infants showed that infants who shared the same bedroom as their parents at night had far less chance of falling victim to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Global Gripe of the day:

Princess Diana and media manipulation.
Monday 8th January: Caught off guard by four photographers, Diana stood in the street crying hysterically for a minute before getting in her car and driving off.

Personal trivia:

It rained all day yesterday. The constant rain that we have had over the last week has created a real monster on the slopes of our river bank. The grass now stands about six foot tall and yours truley has been assigned the task to deal with it... One cannot win . I guess the fresh air will do me good, but don't you just hate the obscure body itches that cut grass leave for hours after the deed is done?
