International:

A story of hope for Romanian orphans with 24 year old Jacqueline Lurman of the Gold Coast participating in a new orphan care program. The travel costs to Romania cost Jacqueline over Au$3,000 but the welcome that she got from the kids in the orphanage there was quite extraordinary. When she first arrived at the gates of the orphanage the kids literally poured out in waves and swamped her. Victims of the Ceaucescu regime she said that they were starved of love and that volunteer care workers had provided the youngsters with their first experience of cuddles, hugs and fun.

Political:

Rumours in Mundingburra suggest that Ken Davies, the MP dumped from that seat leading up to the crucial by-election, will run as an independent. He is to make an announcement on Wednesday. Frank Tanti, the Liberal candidate currently leads the Labor candidate, Townsville Mayor Tony Mooney by 8 points.

Business:

It appears that banks are about to change their tack in trying to attract new home loan business. The latest ploy appers to be the offering of cars, holidays to Bali and prizes. Sounds like a lottery to me - rather like the selecdtion of the best long term interest rate package that they offer.

Sport:

According to the latest reports Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralidharan who has been no-balled for "chucking" in two cricket tests now is not alone. At least 5 other bowlers are in the ICCs "X File" and will be watched very carefully by umpires in future. Reports from the Sri Lankan camp suggest that they cannot afford to play the disgraced spinner any more and that his test days are probably over.

Social:

An alarming report has revealed that crooks might be installing the burglar alarms for many of the rich and famous leaving them open to break-ins by the very people that they are trying to keep out. "There is no licensing regualtions in Queensland so there is no vetting", said Ken Taylor a private industry figure who is concerned about the credentials of some operators.

Personal trivia:

Well young Alex (my little 5 year old boy) made the papers today with his Koala Trouble short story on the web appearing in an article in the Sunday Mail. It appears that he IS the youngest web builder in the world today. He is absolutely delighted and, as I write, is busy working on his second masterpiece.
The weather today is perfect - sunshine, slivers of cloud, green rolling valleys, birds singing and very little wind. What a fabulous Queensland mix.
