International:

Victorian Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett yesterday said that he was convinced to call a March 30 state election by a Grand Prix protest. The Save Albert Park protest has caused considerable controversy as the park was "sacrificed" for the international formula one race. Of course the decision has absolutely nothing to do with the recent annihilation of the Federal Labor party.

Political:

Prime Minister elect John Howard has vowed to have the coalition's industrial relations and unfair dismissal laws passed in the first sitting of Parliament. Mr Howard said that he was determined to fix what he called "this stupid unfair dismissal law". His stand comes amid growing union opposition to the coalition's industrial and Telstra proposals.

Unions are already working on a wage blow out with Australian Manufacturers Workers Union putting in a claim for a 15% wage increase because the wages accord is going to be scrapped.

The unions remind me of a little boy who goes out and breaks a toy he does not like because it doesn't work like he wants it to... even if the rest of the class like it and know how to use it.

Business:

Expectations of a bull run on the Australian Stock Exchange in the wake of the Coalition's Federal Election victory have further nose-dived because of a slump in the gold price. Gold has fallen well below US400 to close at US$393.7 yesterday.

Sport:

Everybody's talking about this weekend's Australian Formula One Grand Prix which is taking place at Albert Park in Melbourne. Britain's Damon Hill is expected to perform extremely well at the event and is the driver to beat. Schumaker, who has won the Formula One series over the last two years was enticed by a Au$30 million offer from Ferrari, seems to have taken himself out of the picture with an inferior car.

Social:

Women play an active role in the management of more than half of Australia's small businesses but are dominant in fewer than 10% a new survey has found. By comparison, almost half of the nation's small businesses are run by men alone. The remainder were run by a male-female partnership where the male was dominant.

Personal trivia:

A quiet day yesterday. Cooler again. Today we again visit the Koala Hospital and young Alex will get the opportunity to actually hold a Koala. Big day for the young fellow!
