International:

Documents dating back to 1965 that were released today after a 30 year embargo reveal that the Australian Menzies government were an advocate for war in Vietnam in 1965. There main aim was to bring the US army into the Asian region to ensure that they had a future presence in Australasia to assist Australia if the country was ever threatened.

Political:

Opposition Aboriginal affairs spokesman, Chris Gallus, yesterday attacked the Federal Government's spending on indigenous people, saying that the Aborigines should solve their own problems. Mrs Gallus, whose comments are sure to raise a storm of protest from some quarters were based on the view that Aborigines should learn to take on more resposibility.

Business:

Economists have predicted a smaller deficit for the month of November 1995. Figures are due out on Friday and are expected to be in the region of Au$1.6 to Au$1.7 billion. This good economic news could support the move for a drop in interest rates later this month.

Sport:

In a stunning world class performance at the Adelaide superdrome on Saturday the 4 man Under-19 4000m pursuit team shattered the world junior record by 6.5 seconds to record a time of 4min 10.1 secs. The record also beat the Australian senior record which stood at 4 min 11.79 sec. Not to be outdone the seniors were on the track less than an hour later and beat that record with a time of 4 min 9.72 seconds.

Social:

A survey has found that 40% of females are sexually abused in some way before the age of 16. The survey is based on a study involving 2181 women from Melbourne. Fewer than 10% had told their doctor that they had been abused. The study also found that 28% of the women who had partners had been physically or emotionally abused by their partner in the year leading up to the study.

Personal trivia:

We had a lovely quiet day yesterday and retired early to bed. 1996 came in without so much as a car racing down our street. The joys of living in a small urban style neighbourhood! Today it is magnificent. warm and envigorating. There was a short sharp shower about half an hour ago. The dust has settled and 1996 is going to be a great year. All the best for 1996 - may the new year bring all the joy, hopes and happiness that you expect and deserve.
