International:

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Australians competing at the Atlanta Olympics.

We had the brilliant 200 metre swim by Daniel Kowalski who came in with the bronze in his "weakest event".

It was a day of devastation for 3000 metre individual pusuit cyclist, Lucy Tyler-Sharman who was ousted from her position after a court decision in Australia on Saturday re-instated Kathy Watt as the Australian representative for the race.

Then we have the ongoing saga about Dean Capobianco and the allegedly positive drug finding which the IAAF are trying to enforce so that our star 200 metre sprinter cannot compete.

In women's hockey and basketball the Aussies blitzed their opposition with the hockey team blitzing the Spanish team 4-0. All the more remarkable because the Spanish won the gold at the last Olympics.

Political:

One of the old cornerstones of the Labor Party training policy is being smashed. The Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Colleges will, from now, have to compete with private colleges for millions of dollars in training funds.

Under this new initiative, TAFE Colleges will compete for up to 50% of government training funds (about Au$500 million per year) by the year 2000.

Business:

The control of newspaper publisher John Fairfax Limited has been thrown into the cauldron again with Conrad Blacks' Hollinger International saying that it could increase its stake to 24.7% or sell out completely.

The company has advised the Australian Stock Exchange that it is considering selling out its stake to raise funds.

Mr Black has previously said that he was unhappy about local constraints to his increased ownership of Fairfax and felt like a "fatted calf waiting to be devoured by local predators".

Sport:

Its all happening at the Atlanta Olympic Games.

Personal trivia, from the global office:

Another cold night with temperatures reaching just four degrees celcius overnight. Beautiful and warm outside - augers well for the day ahead!
