Background: Merv has been a small business owner most of his life with businesses in service stations, towing, motor repairs, second hand furniture, mining, earth moving and used cars. Merv retired in 1993. Merv has lived in Wynnum, Cleveland most of his life.

Community work: In 1995 he was the publicity officer and organiser of the Centenary Celebrations of 100 year birth of our national song Waltzing Matilda. He was nominated for the Queenslander of the year award in 1995. Merv has been involved in charitable work for over 30 years. He formed the Cairns Country Music Club in 1989 - winning the Australian Club of the year in 1993. He formed the Australian Bush Poets Association in Tamworth in 1990 - holding the first Australian championship that year.
