Missing the point
Queensland Times - 9th August 1997

Anne Scott’s response to my letter regarding the ALP and ACTU’s promotion of extreme left wing groups completely misses the point.

First may I say that who is ever her adviser on the internet should go on a course before Mrs Scott makes the astonishing claim that “where one group or another is placed on the Internet is irrelevant”.

An yes, I know that the Trade Union do some wonderful work for Australian workers and for that they are to be applauded, but lets calla a spade a spade. If the Trade Union movement had a genuine interest in only the wages and working conditions of men and women in Australia then why are they openly promoting political groups that support terrorism, others that undermine the Australian way of life other seek the legislation of drug use and others which provide totally unmoderated “on-line introductions agencies” for gays and lesbians. The operative word being “unmoderated” - Let’s hope our kids don’t go for an innocent on-line visit.

You see Mrs Scott. Left Link, a recognised national organisation promoted by the ACTU, is doing just that - on the internet. This “national organisation should be of great concern to moderate ALP voters as it reveals the previously hidden violent extreme left wing sects within ALP ranks. It is the on-line web site which promotes violent protests and action to close down One Nation meetings - thus any initial interest in the organisation. I will happily demonstrate exactly what I mean in a public forum of your choosing - all I need is a phone line and power.

Now if we were to put the shoe on the other foot where Pauline Hanson’s One Nation had the gall to promote an extreme right wing group the press would have a field day - they do so anyway without any sound factual basis. A trifle ironic isn’t it then that Beazley, Evens and others in the ALP would perpetuate this myth.

I will not buy into your fight with the Liberal Party as I think that between you, you represent the tweedle-dum and tweedle-dee of politics.

With respect to Pauline Hanson let me just say that she has more guts than the whole ALP front bench thrown together. They hide behind snide one-liners and the support that they get so freely from their mates in the mainstream media. For your information, Pauline is in her electorate 90% of the time. Go visit her office any day when she is not in Parliament - Ipswich voters who have sought her support in the past will attest to this.
