Before it even started, former deputy PM Dr Jim Cairns was removed from the meeting for distributing pamphlets and being, according to David Ettridge "not in a fit state".

Dr Cairns made much of the incident the next day and presented himself to the media as a reliable source of information about the various incidents that took place on the night. He went as far as saying (Live on the Ten 11:30 news) that the man who was injured after the meeting was a protester.
