A voracious reader of racing publications as a boy learning the inner workings of cars. Father convinced racing official he was eighteen years old when he was seventeen in order to enter his first race a novice event in Canada. Earned a bachelor's degree in history from Denison University (Granville, Ohio). Quit racing for five months in 1976 and joined a Chicago Advertising agency. Minimising participation in other race series to concentrate on IndyCar and devote more time to growing business interests. Opened Honda dealership in Mechanicsburg, Pa in January 1988 and Toyota-Lexus dealership at Mechanicsburg, Pa in July 1991. Serves as technical advisor and curriculum consultant for Mid-Ohio's new driving school. Founder and chairman of annual Bobby Rahal Columbus Charities Pro-Am Golf Tournament - raising more than US$900,000 to date. Avid golfer with ten handicap. He and his wife Debi are parents of daughters Michaela and Samantha and sons Jarrad and Graham Robert.
