Racing Career:

1980 - Won British Formula Three Championship with six wins and seven pole positions.

1981 - Finished third in the Formula Two championship for Toleman factory team scoring two wins.

1982 - Scored two pole positions in Formula Two for Spirit-Honda.

1983 - Drove F1 for Spirit-Honda representing Honda in their comeback to Grand Prix racing and performing developmental testing. Best finish was seventh at the Australian Grand Prix. Also competed in Group 0 finishing fourth at LeMans and scoring a win at Mugello, Italy.

1984 - Drove in six F1 races splitting time between Toleman-Hart and Tyrrell- Ford. Finished fourth at Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Finished sixteenth in F1 championship. Finished second in Japanese Formula Two championship with four wins and four poles out of eight races. Also named Group O co-champion with Bob Wolleck driving Porsche.

1985 - Drove for the Ferrari F1 team scoring a second place finish at the Canadian and United States (Detroit) Grand Prix. Finished seventh in the F1 rankings joining team after two races. Led first race for team (San Marino) before dropping out with fuel problems.

1986 - Returned to the Ferrari Formula One team, finishing fifth in the World Championship ahead of team mate Michele Alboreto. Scored four podium finishes.

1987 - Drove for McLaren-TAG Porsche taking sixth overall in championship, with two seconds and three third place finishes.

1988 - Moved to Ligier-Judd Formula One team. Also drove Mercedes Group C Car scoring one win (Spa 1000).

1989 - Drove for Onyx-Ford F1 Team, finishing third in Portuguese Grand Prix and fifth in French Grand Prix. Tenth overall in standings.

1990 - Returned to struggling Onyx team but joined Mazda at LeMans and conducted testing for various teams.

1991 - Drove for AGS and Footwork Formula One teams. Competed in Group C Sportscars in Europe and Japan, finishing sixth at LeMans for Mazda. Became development driver for McLaren semi-automatic gearbox program.

1992 - Third place finish at Detroit in IndyCar debut. Gave Tony Bettenhausen his first visit to the podium as an owner. Also finished third in the Molson Indy Vancouver, making a total of five finishes in the Top Ten. named 1992 Rookie of the Year.

1993 - Scored one podium finish (third at Vancouver) in sixteen events. Qualified in Top Ten seven times. Returned to Bettenhausen team in 1994.

1994 - Started all sixteen races for Bettenhausen Motorsports in year-old Penske chassis. Scored four Top Five finishes and an excellent sixth place starting position at Michigan. Announced a multi-year contract with Bettenhausen and sponsor Alumax.
