Racing Career:

First attended races at age nine in South Africa with father Jaap who drove Lotus 7 in competition.

1973 - Won five races. Finished second overall in Dutch Formula Ford 1600 series.

1974 - Drove in German Formula Three championship. Also made two Formula Ford starts, with one win.

1975 - Captured European Formula Ford title.

1976 - Finished fourth in Dutch and fifth in European Formula Ford 1600 championships. Scored one win (Hockanheim) in four Super Vee starts.

1977 - Captured European Super Vee title with nine wins.

1978 - Won two of the three Super Vee starts. Raced European Formula Three scoring one pole.

1979 - Returned to Formula Three. Finished second twice behind Alain Prost. Won three of five European Super Vee starts.

1980 - Won two races and finished in the top three fourteen tines at Super Vee championship runner-up.

1981 - Came to US to drive in Super Vee finishing fourth overall.

1982 - Returned to European Super Vee.

1983 - Back to US Super Vee series.

1984 - Won US Super Vee championship. Made IndyCar debut with eighth place at Elkhart Lake.

1985 - Won CART Rookie of the Year award finishing eighteenth in PPG point standings. Scored five Top Ten finishes. Drove to seventh place and Rookie of the Year honours at first Indianapolis 500. Finished fifth at Cleveland, his season best.

1986 - Competed in fifteen of seventeen events with actor David Hasselhoff's race for Life Team. Finished seventeenth in standings. Took five Top Ten finishes including sixths at Phoenix and Toronto. Finished second at IMSA Daytona 24 Hours with A.J.Foyt Jr and Danny Sullivan.

1987 - Season included nine Top Ten finishes, third place at Phoenix and recognition as "Most Improved Driver" by votes of his peers. Finished seventh in PPG point rankings, earning berth in Marlboro Challenge.

1988 - Five Top Ten finishes in fifteen starts for Dick Simon Racing. Qualified and finished second at Portland. Qualified sixth, finished tenth at Indy. Suffered left foot and leg injuries in crash at Pocono.

1989 - Campaigned Dick Smith Lola all year. Season highlight was fourth placed finish at Road America, third place at Portland. Won IMSA 12 Hours of Sebring with Geoff Brabham and Chip Robinson.

1990 - Season marked by greatest career accomplishment, winning the Indianapolis 500 with Douglas Shierson Racing. Started all sixteen races scoring ten Top Tens. Qualified at Indy on front row in one of the fastest cars in the field. Finished eighth on points.

1991 - Drove to two wins at Phoenix and Nazareth in seventeen events. Twelve Top Ten finishes for Vince Granatelli Racing. Qualified fourteenth finished third at Indy. Started twenty-eth at the Marlboro 500 at Michigan but drove to second place finish behind Rick Mears. Turned fastest race laps at Michigan, Indy and Nazareth. Sixth in PPG points led 207 of 2,107 laps.

1992 - Qualified fourth at Indianapolis and Michigan 500s driving for Chip Ganassi Racing. Announced deal to drive full 1993 season with Target Scotch Chip Ganassi Racing Team. Competed in IMSA events at 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 hours of Sebring for Nissan and Laguna Seca for Jaguar. Also competed in the IROC for the first time.

1993 - Scored first career IndyCar pole at Indianapolis. Finished runner-up at Indy. A third place podium finisher at New England and Laguna Seca. Eighth overall in PPG points standings.

1994 - Started fifteen races for Indy Regency Racing. Season highlight came at Michigan where he finished second, giving Indy Regency Racing its best ever finish. He also finished sixth at Vancouver and Laguna Seca as his only other Top Ten finishes.
